Insurance for Expats in Mallorca — Generali, in English

Mallorca is the largest Balearic Island with over 920,000 permanent residents — one of the most popular expat destinations in Spain. Palma de Mallorca is a cosmopolitan European city with a Baroque cathedral, international schools and private hospitals. Port d'Andratx hosts some of the most exclusive Mediterranean property; Alcúdia and Pollença in the north attract a quieter British and German community; the Tramuntana mountains (UNESCO World Heritage) offer dramatic villages and traditional fincas.

Turner Insurance is an exclusive Generali agency based in Jávea, Alicante. Generali is a national insurer and coverage is available across all Spanish territories including the Balearic Islands. We arrange every line of cover an expat household needs — entirely in English, by phone, email and WhatsApp. Andrew Turner has worked in Spanish insurance since 2001 and has been an authorised Generali agent since 2007, DGS registry C0467B54657010.

Mallorca carries specific risks that every property owner must understand — above all the lessons of the October 2018 Sant Llorenç flood disaster, in which 13 people died and catastrophic DANA flooding devastated properties in the eastern coastal valleys. We ensure your policy has the Consorcio coverage and private terms correctly in place, and calculate your rebuild value under the regla proporcional at quotation.

About Mallorca

Mallorca offers one of the most complete and diverse expat environments in Spain. Palma de Mallorca — a sophisticated, cosmopolitan city with a Baroque cathedral (La Seu), a thriving old town (Old Quarter), private hospitals, international schools and a lively cultural life — anchors the island. Port d'Andratx in the southwest hosts some of the most exclusive and expensive Mediterranean residential property. The north and northeast — Alcúdia, Pollença, Artà — attract a more permanent and quieter British and German community, often in traditional stone properties.

The Serra de Tramuntana — the limestone mountain range running along the northwest coast — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to dramatic villages (Valldemossa, Deià, Sóller) and traditional fincas. The eastern coast, including Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Artà and the coastal valleys, is where the October 2018 DANA disaster struck with devastating force.

Local Insurance Considerations in Mallorca

Insuring property in Mallorca comes with a few local factors that are critical to get right:

  • The 2018 Sant Llorenç DANA flood disaster: on 9 October 2018, a catastrophic DANA storm killed 13 people and caused devastating damage in Sant Llorenç des Cardassar in eastern Mallorca. This is the defining insurance case study for the island: properties near barrancos and coastal valleys in eastern Mallorca carry genuine flood risk. The Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros covered the extraordinary catastrophic event; private policies covered the resulting water damage, contents loss and repairs. Both must be correctly in place.
  • Flash flooding and barrancos: heavy autumn and winter rain across the island funnels rapidly through ravines. Properties near watercourses or in coastal valleys are at elevated risk and need careful policy terms.
  • Tramuntana finca rebuild costs: traditional stone fincas in the Tramuntana mountains have very high rebuild costs — specialist materials, heritage elements and construction access make them expensive to reinstate. The regla proporcional is especially dangerous here: underinsurance will mean any claim is proportionally reduced.
  • Extreme property values: Port d'Andratx and other premium areas have some of the highest residential property values in Spain. Correct rebuild values and contents declarations are essential.
  • Wildfire on forested slopes: pine-covered hillsides across the island carry wildfire risk. This is an insured peril under Generali policies.
  • Holiday and rental property market: Mallorca has a very large stock of seasonal and holiday-let properties. The correct occupancy basis is essential — incorrectly declared properties risk claim refusal or reduction.
The golden rule — especially in Mallorca: always insure your property on its rebuild value, not its market or purchase price. Under the Spanish regla proporcional, a home insured below rebuild value has every claim reduced in proportion. At Mallorca property values, this can mean losing hundreds of thousands of euros. We calculate the correct rebuild value for you at quotation, at no charge.

Frequently Asked Questions — Insurance in Mallorca

Yes. Generali is a national insurer operating across all Spanish territories, including Mallorca and the Balearic Islands. Turner Insurance arranges cover remotely by phone, email and WhatsApp — you do not need to visit our office in Jávea. Andrew Turner, DGS C0467B54657010, has been an authorised Generali agent since 2007.
On 9 October 2018, a catastrophic DANA storm struck Sant Llorenç des Cardassar in eastern Mallorca, killing 13 people and causing devastating property damage across the coastal valley. The Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros (Spain's state catastrophe fund) covered the extraordinary flooding event; private policies then covered the resulting water damage, contents loss and repair costs. The key lesson: both the Consorcio coverage (automatically included on every valid home policy) and a private policy with correct terms must be in place. Properties near barrancos or coastal valleys in eastern Mallorca remain at genuine flood risk.
Historic fincas in Mallorca — particularly in the Tramuntana mountains and inland villages — have rebuild values that can be significantly higher than their market price, due to traditional stone construction, specialist materials and heritage elements. Under the Spanish regla proporcional, insuring below the true rebuild value means every claim is reduced proportionally. We calculate the correct rebuild value at quotation, at no charge, to ensure your finca is fully protected.
Most expats in Mallorca need home insurance at the correct rebuild value (especially important at Mallorca property values), private health insurance, car insurance and life insurance. Many add funeral cover for peace of mind. Given the 2018 Sant Llorenç flood disaster and the island's high property values, getting rebuild values and flood cover terms right is particularly important in Mallorca. We arrange all lines through Generali, entirely in English.
