The 60-second summary. Spanish life insurance comes in two product families: term life (cheapest, fixed-period cover) and mortgage protection (decreasing-balance, tied to a Spanish mortgage). Generali, Mapfre, Allianz, Santalucía and Vida Caixa all offer comparable products with different pricing, medical underwriting requirements and English-language service quality. The key trap is failing to nominate beneficiaries correctly, which can trigger 30-day Spanish probate delays and unnecessary inheritance tax.

Expat life insurance in Spain: what is different for foreign residents

Expat life insurance in Spain is priced the same way for every nationality. The insurer looks at your age, your health and the sum you choose. What changes for expats is the paperwork, the language and the cross-border side. Many expats hold assets here and in their home country. That makes the beneficiary nomination the part worth getting right.

We handle expat life insurance in Spain in English from quote to claim. Your medical questions and your policy wording are explained in English. At claim time we deal with Generali in Spanish for your family. A correctly nominated Spanish policy pays the beneficiary direct. For the cross-border detail, read our cross-border expat guide to life insurance in Spain.

Expat life insurance Spain: cost, entry age and medicals

Term life starts from €18 a month with Generali Vida. Cover can be taken up to age 69. Whether term is even the right shape — against whole-of-life or decesos — is weighed in our term vs whole-of-life guide. A medical examination is only asked for above €200,000 of cover. Below that an honest health questionnaire is enough. See exactly what the Generali Vida life insurance cover includes before you compare quotes.

Inheritance tax and beneficiary rules

Spanish life insurance payouts to nominated beneficiaries are taxed under inheritance tax (ISD), not income tax. Each region has different ISD rules; Valencia inheritance tax currently allows a 99% reduction for children, spouses and parents of the deceased. The beneficiary nomination is the most important paperwork on any Spanish life policy. Failing to nominate, or nominating "estate", forces the payout through Spanish probate — adding 6–18 months delay and full inheritance tax to the bill.

How to get a like-for-like life insurance quote in Spain

  1. Decide the product type — term life or mortgage protection.
  2. Decide the sum insured — usually 5–10x annual income for term life, or matching the mortgage balance.
  3. Complete the medical questionnaire — honest declarations are essential; non-disclosure voids cover.

Comparing prices only works once you have picked the product type. Not settled on that yet? Read our full guide to life insurance in Spain and every type of cover. It explains each policy in plain English. Then come back here and compare the numbers.
