What affects your Spanish life insurance premium
- Age at entry — the biggest driver. Premiums roughly double every 10 years of age.
- Sum insured — linear up to medical-underwriting thresholds, then disproportionate above.
- Smoker status — smoker premiums are typically 50–100% above non-smoker.
- Pre-existing conditions — declared on the medical questionnaire, may attract loadings or exclusions.
- Occupation — high-risk jobs (construction, fishing, offshore) attract loadings.
- Term length — longer terms mean lower monthly cost but higher total payments.
Inheritance tax and beneficiary rules
Spanish life insurance payouts to nominated beneficiaries are taxed under inheritance tax (ISD), not income tax. Each region has different ISD rules; Valencia inheritance tax currently allows a 99% reduction for children, spouses and parents of the deceased. The beneficiary nomination is the most important paperwork on any Spanish life policy. Failing to nominate, or nominating "estate", forces the payout through Spanish probate — adding 6–18 months delay and full inheritance tax to the bill.
How to get a like-for-like life insurance quote in Spain
- Decide the product type — term life or mortgage protection.
- Decide the sum insured — usually 5–10x annual income for term life, or matching the mortgage balance.
- Complete the medical questionnaire — honest declarations are essential; non-disclosure voids cover.
