Insurance for Expats in Ibiza — Generali, in English

Ibiza (Eivissa) has a large, well-established permanent resident community quite separate from its international party reputation. British, German, Dutch, Scandinavian, Italian, French and American expats all settle here. They come for the island's beauty, the UNESCO-listed Dalt Vila old town and the remarkable quality of the light. It is a lifestyle that has drawn artists, creatives and wealthy buyers for decades.

Property values in Ibiza are among the highest in all of Spain. A finca or sea-view villa in Sant Josep, Sant Joan or Santa Eulària can fetch prices to match prime European addresses. That makes getting the sum insured right unusually important. Under the Spanish regla proporcional, insuring below rebuild value cuts every claim by the same proportion. At Ibiza values, that can cost you hundreds of thousands of euros.

Turner Insurance is an exclusive Generali agency based in Javea, Alicante. Generali is a national insurer and coverage is available across all Spanish territories including the Balearic Islands. We arrange every line of cover entirely in English — by phone, email and WhatsApp. Andrew Turner has over 25 years of insurance experience in Spain and has been an authorised exclusive agent since 2007, DGS registry C0467B54657010.

About Ibiza (Eivissa)

Ibiza has two identities that coexist on the same island. The first is the global tourism and nightlife brand. The second is bigger in permanent population: a cosmopolitan island community that chose Ibiza for its beauty, climate, culture and way of life. Ibiza Town (Eivissa) is a working city with real cultural depth, built around the UNESCO-listed fortified old town of Dalt Vila. The rest of the island splits between Sant Antoni on the west coast and Santa Eulària des Riu in the northeast. The rural municipalities of Sant Josep de sa Talaia and Sant Joan de Labritja cover the remainder.

The natural setting is extraordinary. There are dramatic cliffs and coves, the iconic Es Vedrà rock formation and a pine-covered interior. The Ses Salines natural park is UNESCO World Heritage, as part of the Ibiza Biosphere Reserve. That landscape shapes the insurance too. Steep barrancos channel flash floods, forested slopes carry wildfire risk, and a very large share of homes here are seasonal or holiday properties.

Local Insurance Considerations in Ibiza

Insuring property in Ibiza comes with a set of local factors that are especially important at the island's property values:

  • Extreme property values and the regla proporcional: Ibiza has some of the highest residential property values in Spain. Under the Spanish regla proporcional, a property insured below its true rebuild value has every claim reduced proportionally. At Ibiza prices this can mean losing hundreds of thousands of euros. Calculating the correct rebuild value — not the market price — is the single most important step when insuring an Ibiza property. We do this at quotation, at no charge.
  • DANA flash flooding via barrancos: steep ravines channel heavy autumn and winter rain very quickly across the island. Catastrophic DANA flooding is paid by the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros. This state catastrophe fund is included automatically on every valid home policy. Your private policy covers the resulting water damage, contents loss and repair costs.
  • Wildfire on pine-covered interior: Ibiza's pine and scrub interior carries genuine wildfire risk. This is an insured peril under Generali policies. Properties near forested land need careful coverage review.
  • Seasonal and holiday property occupancy: Ibiza has an enormous proportion of properties used seasonally or as holiday lets. Standard home policies usually require periodic occupation every 30–60 days. Cover can be excluded or restricted for extended unoccupied periods. The correct occupancy clause is essential and is confirmed at quotation.
  • High-value contents declarations: many Ibiza residents have significant art collections, antiques, jewellery and high-value personal property. Standard contents limits may not be sufficient — specific declarations ensure full cover for these items.
The golden rule — especially in Ibiza: always insure your property on its rebuild value, not its market or purchase price. Under the Spanish regla proporcional, underinsurance means every claim is proportionally reduced. At Ibiza property values, the financial consequences of getting this wrong are severe. We calculate the correct figure for you at quotation, at no charge.

Frequently Asked Questions — Insurance in Ibiza

Most expats in Ibiza start with home insurance — and at Ibiza property values, getting the rebuild value right under the regla proporcional is especially critical. Insuring below rebuild value means every claim is proportionally reduced, and at Ibiza property values this can mean losing hundreds of thousands of euros. Beyond home cover, private health insurance, car insurance and life insurance are the standard package, with many clients also declaring high-value contents (art, antiques, jewellery) separately. We arrange all lines through Generali, entirely in English.
Standard home insurance policies usually require periodic occupation — typically every 30 to 60 days — and may restrict or exclude claims for escape of water, theft or damage that occurs during an extended unoccupied period. A large proportion of Ibiza properties are seasonal or used only a few months a year, making the correct occupancy clause one of the most important policy terms to get right. We arrange policies on the correct seasonal or unoccupied-property basis and confirm this at quotation.
The most important step is calculating the correct rebuild value — the cost of reinstating the property from scratch, which in Ibiza can be very significantly higher than the market price. Under the Spanish regla proporcional, any underinsurance results in every claim being proportionally reduced. We calculate the rebuild value for you at quotation, at no charge. We also ensure the correct occupancy basis, activity declaration (important for holiday lets), and any high-value contents declarations are all in place.
Yes. Generali is a national insurer operating across all Spanish territories, including Ibiza and the Balearic Islands. Turner Insurance arranges cover remotely by phone, email and WhatsApp — you do not need to visit our office in Javea. Every policy, every document and every conversation is handled in English. Andrew Turner, DGS C0467B54657010, has been an authorised exclusive agent since 2007.
Yes. We arrange Generali car insurance in Ibiza on Spanish plates, from third-party (terceros) up to fully comprehensive (todo riesgo). Your UK, EU, Canadian or US no-claims bonus is normally accepted, which can reduce your premium. Everything — the policy, your documents and any claim — is handled in English. Call 966 461 625 for a free quote.
If you live in an urbanisación or apartment complex, the comunidad de propietarios must hold a community policy under the Ley de Propiedad Horizontal — this covers the shared structure and common areas. It does not cover the inside of your own home, your contents or your personal liability, so you still need your own home insurance. We arrange both community cover and individual home cover, making sure there is no gap between the two.
There is no single price — car, home and health premiums depend on your vehicle, your property's rebuild value, your age, history and the cover you choose, and Ibiza's high property values make an accurate rebuild figure especially important. As a guide, annual multi-trip travel insurance starts from around €120 a year. The best way to get a real figure is a free, no-obligation quote: call us on 966 461 625 or message us in English on WhatsApp.
A UK Form S1 gives UK state pensioners access to the Spanish public health system, so it is not a legal requirement to also hold private cover. Many residents still take a private Generali health policy for faster appointments, a wider choice of specialists and English-speaking doctors. If you do not qualify for an S1, you will generally need private health insurance to support residency. Note that a post-Brexit GHIC only covers emergencies and is not a substitute for resident cover.
Yes. With so many craft kept at Ibiza's marinas, marine and boat cover is one of the lines we arrange most often here — hull, third-party liability and equipment. We can advise on the right level of cover for your craft and where it is moored, all in English, and route you to a free quote on 966 461 625.
