What is marine hull insurance?

Marine hull insurance (Generali Cascos) covers the vessel itself — its hull, machinery, rigging, gear and equipment — against the perils of the sea (fortuna de mar). It is the cover used for commercial and larger vessels — fishing boats, charter and trading craft — rather than small pleasure boats, and it is governed by the Maritime Navigation Act and the Commercial Code.

For a recreational boat, the right product is instead our marine (pleasure-craft) insurance; marine hull is for working and higher-value vessels insured at an agreed value. Personal watercraft have their own product — see jet ski insurance in Spain.

What it covers

Repairs are settled with new-for-old deductions by the vessel's age, and a claim over 75% of the insured value may be treated as a constructive total loss. Defined navigation (trading) limits apply. If the worst happens, our marine insurance claim guide sets out the Spanish process step by step.

Who needs it

Owners and operators of commercial or higher-value vessels — fishing fleets, charter operators, work boats and traders — who need to protect the vessel itself, not just their liability to others. It pairs with the compulsory and voluntary third-party cover in our marine insurance, and, for repair businesses, with ship repairers' insurance.

Marine Hull Insurance Spain — FAQs

Usually not — marine hull (Cascos) is a "large risk" policy for commercial and larger vessels. For a private yacht, motor cruiser or RIB, the right cover is our recreational marine insurance, which includes the compulsory third-party liability plus hull, accident and assistance.
The value of the vessel is agreed between you and Generali at the outset and used to settle a total-loss claim, so there is no argument over the figure after a loss. Fuel and provisions can be added by special agreement, up to 10% of the vessel's value.
Yes — where your vessel is found at fault in a collision, the policy pays 75% of the running-down (collision) liability. The remaining share is dealt with separately and cannot be insured elsewhere under this policy.
