Spanish Insurance Law: Motorhome and Campervan Insurance — Key Facts, Limits & Exclusions

The legal framework, waiting periods, exclusions and sources every buyer should know. We link the sources inline to the BOE (Boletín Oficial del Estado) and the Spanish regulators.

Legal framework

Motorhomes (autocaravanas) and converted vans (camper) are regulated under RDL 8/2004 plus specific provisions in Real Decreto 750/2010 for vehicle classification. Compulsory third-party cover applies as for cars and vans. Importantly, self-converted vans (camper conversions) must be reclassified at the DGT — a process called reforma — and require an updated technical inspection (ITV especial) and insurance valuation reflecting the conversion value.

Buildings vs vehicle: the dual-cover question

A motorhome is both a vehicle and a living space. Standard motor cover handles only the vehicle. Comprehensive motorhome policies (Generali Autocaravana, four tiers) add:

  • Contents — mattress, kitchen equipment and electronics, usually up to €5,000
  • Accessories — awnings, bicycles and satellite kit, usually up to €2,000
  • Living-quarters assistance — gas-system failure, water-tank leaks and fridge breakdown

European breakdown and 60-day rule

Standard motorhome policies include European breakdown cover for 60–90 days per trip across the EU plus Switzerland, Norway, UK and most Mediterranean countries. Trips exceeding the per-trip limit need temporary extension (extensión territorial) — most insurers grant this free for one trip per year if requested in advance. Brexit note: UK is now outside the EU but most Spanish motor policies still include UK in the European cover area.

Long-term parking and unoccupancy

Motorhomes parked for more than 30 consecutive days in one location should be declared to the insurer. Long-term storage (>90 days) without notice can void theft cover. Most Spanish policies allow parada técnica (planned long parking) up to 6 months with reduced premium — useful for owners who use the motorhome seasonally and store in the rest.

Motorhome Insurance Spain — Generali Autocaravana

Motorhome insurance Spain (Seguro de Autocaravana y Camper) is a specialist vehicle insurance policy for motorhomes, campervans, converted vans (furgonetas camperizadas) and caravans. Generali offers a dedicated autocaravana insurance product with four levels of cover, European breakdown assistance and optional extras specifically designed for motorhome owners who live and travel in their vehicle. Mandatory third-party civil liability applies to all motorhomes regardless of when they are driven.

Important: Under Spanish law, all motorhomes and campervans registered in Spain must carry mandatory civil liability insurance even when the vehicle is parked and not in use. Driving without insurance carries fines of €500–€1,500 and vehicle impoundment. Get a motorhome insurance quote →

Four Cover Tiers — Generali Autocaravana

Choose your level of motorhome cover

  • Third party (terceros básico): Mandatory civil liability — covers damage caused to other people, their vehicles and property. Includes 24-hour European breakdown assistance. Legal minimum required by Spanish law
  • Third party + glass: All third-party cover plus accidental breakage or replacement of all glazing — windscreen, side windows, skylights (claraboyas), acrylic roof lights, and habitation windows. No excess applies to glass claims
  • Third party + glass + theft + fire: All of the above plus: total or partial theft of the motorhome or its contents, damage caused during a theft attempt (forced entry), and fire damage (including fire caused by gas appliances). No excess on theft or fire claims under this tier
  • Comprehensive (todo riesgo): All risks including own damage — collisions, overturning, impact damage and all accidental damage to the motorhome itself. Available with or without a voluntary excess (franquicia). This is the recommended option for motorhomes valued over €30,000

Frequently Asked Questions — Motorhome and Campervan Insurance in Spain

Motorhome, campervan and RV owners on the Costa Blanca have specific concerns around camping where it is allowed, ITV intervals, classification of converted vans, and habitation cover. Here are the most common questions from British, Irish, Dutch and Northern-European owners.

Motorhome insurance, campervan insurance, camper insurance, RV insurance, motor home insurance, recreational vehicle insurance and the Spanish seguro de autocaravana / seguro autocaravana / seguro de caravana all refer to the same legally regulated Spanish product. It covers both the road-vehicle portion (chassis, engine, plates — like car insurance) and the habitation portion (kitchen, bed, shower, gas system, leisure battery, awning). The rules and cover are identical regardless of which English term you searched for. Towed caravans without their own engine use a separate caravan-only policy.
Call our English-speaking team on 966 461 625 (Monday-Friday 09:30–15:00) or email info@turnerinsurance.es with the vehicle details (registration or VIN, year, make, model, length, weight, value), declared usage (leisure / fulltime / occasional), habitation contents value, intended cruising area, your no-claims history and your driving licence category. We send a formal Generali Autocaravana quote within 30 minutes — often on the call — with all 4 cover tiers priced side-by-side.
For most British, Irish, Dutch and Norwegian owners the strongest combination of price, cover and English-language claims is Generali Autocaravana Tier 3 or 4 with full habitation cover and pan-European breakdown. It accepts UK no-claims certificates, covers up to 90 consecutive days per trip across the EU, and includes the awning, satellite dish, solar panels and leisure battery as standard. Mapfre Autocaravana is cheaper but Spanish-only at claim time; Linea Directa Autocaravana is direct-sales but renewal premiums often climb sharply after year one.
Typical 2026 prices on the Costa Blanca: a 6-7 m mid-range motorhome worth €30–€50k on third-party + theft + fire from €280–€380/year; full all-risks Tier 4 with habitation cover from €420–€620/year; a luxury A-class motorhome worth €80–€150k from €620–€1,100/year. Premiums vary by owner age, declared annual usage (leisure days/year), habitation contents value, vehicle length and home-storage arrangements. Fulltimer cover for permanent residents typically adds 50–100% over leisure use.
Match the cover tier (third-party only, terceros ampliado, all-risks without habitation, all-risks with full habitation), habitation contents value declared, and excess level across quotes. The big mistake most buyers make is comparing a vehicle-only quote against an all-risks-with-habitation quote — the €100–€300 price difference reflects a major coverage gap. Call Turner Insurance on 966 461 625 for a Generali Autocaravana benchmark with the right tier identified for your usage pattern.
Two distinct elements: (1) the VEHICLE — the chassis, engine, road-worthy components, exactly like a van or large car policy; and (2) the HABITATION — the living area: kitchen, bed, shower, fridge, gas system, leisure battery, solar panels, awning, etc. A pure vehicle policy is much cheaper but leaves the interior uninsured for fire, water damage and theft. Habitation cover typically adds €100-€300 to the annual premium and pays for the typically €5,000-€20,000 of fixtures inside.
Most standard motorhome insurance assumes the vehicle is a leisure asset used 60-180 days/year — not a permanent residence. Full-time living-in-vehicle (called 'fulltimer' insurance) needs a specialist policy, fewer than 5 Spanish insurers offer it, and premiums are typically 50-100% higher. There's also more underwriting around your living arrangements. We can arrange fulltimer cover where required.
Spain has a complex patchwork of rules: officially designated 'área de servicio' (free overnight for motorhomes) — fine; designated campsites — fine; supermarket and motorway service car parks — generally tolerated for one-night stops without setting up; on public streets in towns — varies by municipality, many ban it; on beaches, in nature reserves, in 'no camping' zones — fines from €100-€500. Insurance is valid wherever the vehicle is legally parked.
Effectively yes — motorhomes routinely travel to France, Portugal, Italy and back. Most comprehensive policies include 90-day European cover including alternative accommodation if breakdown is severe (a hotel for 2-3 nights while waiting for parts). Recovery of a 3-tonne motorhome is much more expensive than a car (specialist trucks, harder logistics), so the cover is genuinely needed.
Up to 3,500 kg gross weight: standard B (car) licence is sufficient. Above 3,500 kg up to 7,500 kg: C1 licence required (separate test, valid until age 65 then medical renewal). Above 7,500 kg: full HGV C licence. Many British clients arriving with motorhomes don't realise their vehicle is over 3,500 kg laden — we check the gross weight at policy quotation.
Motorhomes (autocaravanas) have ITV intervals like vans: 2 years from new for the first 6 years, then annually. Imported UK motorhomes need an initial ITV for matriculación — this can be challenging because emission testing on older diesel motorhomes can fail Spanish standards (UK standards are different). We advise on this before clients import an older motorhome to Spain.
Self-builds (a van you've converted with a bed, kitchen, etc.) can be insured but are more complex. The vehicle must either remain classified as 'industrial' (van insurance with no habitation cover for the build, or a habitation top-up) or be formally re-classified as 'autocaravana' at Tráfico (requires an ITV inspection of the conversion to ensure it meets motorhome safety standards). We help clients through this classification.
Yes — RHD motorhomes are common on Spanish roads and accepted by Spanish insurers without premium loading. The typical issues are: headlight beam pattern (must be adjusted for driving on the right), Spanish-style number plate dimensions, fitting of an Iberia-spec gas system if you want to use Spanish bottles. ITV will check all of these.
Pet liability under your home insurance follows you on motorhome trips. The motorhome insurance itself doesn't usually have specific pet cover, but doesn't exclude pets either. A dog injured in an accident is sometimes covered under personal injury cover at a small sum (€500-€1,500). Travel rules require microchip, EU pet passport / Animal Health Certificate, and recent rabies vaccination.
Yes — many motorhome owners tow a smaller car ('toad'). The towed car needs separate Spanish insurance (a normal car policy) but doesn't need to be road-taxed if towed wheels-up on a trailer. Some motorhome insurers include tow-bar liability cover for the trailer; others want a specific extension. The towing arrangement (A-frame, dolly, full trailer) is technical and we confirm before quoting.
Standard motorhome insurance is for personal use only. Renting out to others (Airbnb-style sites, peer-to-peer rental) needs a specific commercial hire policy which is significantly more expensive and only available from a few insurers. Renting to family or close friends without payment is sometimes treated as personal use, but the policy must be checked. Misrepresenting commercial hire as personal use voids cover.
Awnings, satellite dishes, solar panels, bike racks and other externals are normally covered under habitation if itemised. Awnings damaged by wind are a frequent claim — most policies include wind-storm damage but with sub-limits. Solar panels and large add-ons should be specifically declared with values to ensure full payout at claim.
Yes, but with strict conditions: vehicle must be locked, doors and windows closed and secured, items not visible from outside. Sub-limits apply — typically €1,000-€2,500 for total contents, with per-item limits (€500 for any single item, €1,000 for electronics). Items left visible (camera on the table, laptop on the bed) are usually NOT covered when stolen — a common claim-decline.
Yes — your standard health insurance covers you medically; the motorhome policy covers the vehicle. For travel within Europe, your Spanish health insurance usually covers up to 60-90 days of emergency care abroad. For longer trips or US/non-EU destinations, separate travel insurance is essential. Many motorhome owners take annual multi-trip travel insurance for this.
Motorhomes total much more easily than cars because the bodywork is large and lightweight. A relatively minor crash can damage the habitation structurally beyond economic repair. GANVAM tables apply for the vehicle portion; the habitation value is paid out separately based on the policy schedule. We advise insuring habitation at the cost to fully replace the interior, not the depreciated current value.
Yes. Any motorhome, campervan or autocaravana registered and used in Spain must by law carry at least compulsory third-party liability cover (seguro de responsabilidad civil obligatoria, or terceros) — exactly like a car. Driving without it risks fines, having the vehicle immobilised or impounded, and being personally liable for any injury or damage you cause. Because a motorhome is also a valuable home on wheels, most owners add fire, theft, glass and own-damage cover on top of the legal minimum.
Yes. A Generali motorhome policy covers you across the European Economic Area for liability, fire, theft, glass and own damage, plus 24-hour breakdown assistance from km 0 throughout Spain, Europe and the Mediterranean countries (for vehicles up to 3,500 kg) — so it is built for touring France, Portugal, Italy and beyond. Comprehensive cover typically runs for trips of up to 60–90 days each. Declare any after-market accessories (awning, solar panels, bike rack) and confirm habitation contents and camping liability separately.
