What Qualifies as a Classic Car in Spain?
Spanish law and the insurance market use several categories for older vehicles, each with different implications for insurance and road tax (IVTM):
Antiguo (Antique/Vintage): Over 20 years old — eligible for some specialist insurance products and reduced road tax
Clásico (Classic): Over 25 years old, well maintained, limited leisure use — the standard threshold for specialist classic car insurance in Spain
Vehículo Histórico: Formally registered with the DGT as a historic vehicle — official designation that can bring further tax benefits and requires meeting specific conservation criteria
For insurance purposes, most classic car policies in Spain apply to vehicles 25 years or older that are maintained in original or period-correct condition and used primarily for leisure — weekend driving, rallies, concours events and club meetings — rather than daily transport. The vehicle must be registered in Spain with a standard or historical number plate.
Vehicles between 10–25 years old (often called antiguo rather than clásico) may also qualify for specialist policies depending on the make, model and value. Contact us to discuss your specific vehicle — 966 461 625.
Agreed Value (Valor Convenido) — Why It Matters for Classic Cars
The single most important feature of classic car insurance in Spain is agreed value cover (valor convenido or valor de mercado pactado). Here is why it matters:
Standard car insurance in Spain uses the GANVAM guide — a book of market values for production vehicles, similar to Glass's Guide in the UK. For a 2019 Ford Focus, GANVAM gives an accurate value. For a restored 1967 Triumph TR4 or a 1972 Porsche 911, GANVAM may value the vehicle at a fraction of its real worth — or may not list it at all.
With agreed value cover, you and Generali agree on the insured value of the vehicle when the policy is taken out — typically based on a professional valuation, purchase documentation or comparable market evidence. If the vehicle is a total loss, you receive the agreed amount in full, with no reference to GANVAM. This is non-negotiable for any classic, collector or restored vehicle with significant value.
Important: If you take out a standard car insurance policy on a classic vehicle without specifying agreed value, you will be paid GANVAM book value in the event of total loss — which for a restored or rare vehicle could be 20–30% of its true market value. Always insist on agreed value when insuring a classic car. We ensure this is specified in your Generali policy.
Classic Car Insurance Spain — Cover Options
Generali offers three levels of cover for classic and historic vehicles in Spain:
Terceros (Third Party — Mandatory Minimum)
Civil liability cover as required by Spanish law for all vehicles, including those registered as vehículo histórico. This is the legal minimum — it covers bodily injury and property damage caused to third parties but does not cover damage to the classic vehicle itself. Suitable only for vehicles with very low intrinsic value that are stored most of the year.
Classic Cover — Agreed Value
Third party liability plus agreed value cover for fire, theft and total loss. The most popular option for classic car owners in Spain — it protects the vehicle's real value against the most common serious risks without requiring full comprehensive cover. Also includes 24-hour European breakdown assistance and legal defence.
Todo Riesgo Clásico (All-Risk Classic)
Full comprehensive cover for classic vehicles — agreed value, own damage, fire, theft, glass, 24-hour European breakdown, legal defence and claims management. The right choice for high-value, fully restored or regularly driven classics. Available with or without excess. Own damage cover applies to accidents both on the road and at shows or events.
Classic Car Insurance for Expats in Spain
Many British, Dutch and Irish expats on the Costa Blanca and across Spain brought their classic cars with them when they moved — or have acquired Spanish-registered classics since arriving. A few specific considerations for expat classic car owners:
Import and matriculación: If your classic car still carries UK, Dutch or Belgian plates, it must be registered in Spain (matriculación) if you are a Spanish resident. We can arrange temporary third-party cover during the registration process and assist with the ITV (roadworthiness inspection) required for registration.
No-claims history: Your UK or Dutch no-claims history is accepted on the classic car policy as well as standard car insurance. Bring your no-claims certificate and we handle the transfer.
UK licence and classic cars: UK, Dutch and Belgian driving licences are valid in Spain. If you become a Spanish resident, you must exchange your licence within 6 months — but this does not affect your classic car policy in the meantime.
ITV for classics: Historic vehicles registered as vehículo histórico are exempt from the standard ITV inspection cycle. Standard old vehicles (antiguo) still require ITV but at different intervals than modern cars.
Vintage motorcycles: Classic and vintage motorcycles can be insured under the same principles — agreed value, limited mileage, leisure use. We cover classic bikes alongside cars. See our motorbike insurance Spain page for details.

Frequently Asked Questions — Classic Car Insurance Spain
Most insurers in Spain apply specialist classic car insurance to vehicles over 25 years old that are maintained in original or period-correct condition and used for leisure purposes rather than daily transport. Official designation as vehículo histórico (historic vehicle) with the DGT provides additional benefits including ITV exemption. Vehicles between 20–25 years (antiguo) may also qualify. The key criteria are age, condition, limited use and secure storage. Contact us on 966 461 625 to confirm whether your specific vehicle qualifies.
Agreed value (valor convenido) means you and the insurer agree on the insured value of the vehicle when the policy starts. In the event of total loss — theft or unrepairable accident damage — you receive that agreed amount in full, with no reference to GANVAM (Spain's standard vehicle valuation guide). For classic, rare or restored vehicles, GANVAM values are often drastically below the real worth. Without agreed value cover, a fully restored classic worth €40,000 might receive a GANVAM settlement of €5,000-€8,000. Always insist on agreed value cover for a classic car — we specify this in every Generali classic policy we arrange.
Classic car insurance in Spain is significantly cheaper than standard car insurance because usage is limited and owners are statistically careful drivers. Third party (terceros) cover starts from around €50/year. Agreed value cover with fire, theft and European breakdown typically costs €100-€250/year depending on the agreed value of the vehicle. Full all-risk (todo riesgo) classic cover starts from around €200/year. For a restored vehicle with an agreed value of €30,000, a comprehensive policy with all-risk cover typically costs €300-€500/year — a fraction of equivalent UK or Dutch classic car insurance premiums.
Yes — once the vehicle is registered in Spain with a Spanish number plate (matriculación), it can be insured under a standard Generali classic car policy. If the vehicle still has UK plates, we can arrange temporary third-party cover during the matriculación process. You will need to pass a Spanish ITV (roadworthiness inspection) and pay import duties if the vehicle has been in Spain for more than 6 months as a resident. Your UK no-claims history transfers directly. We assist with the entire import and insurance process — call 966 461 625.
Yes — classic and vintage motorcycles (motos clásicas) are insured under the same principles as classic cars: agreed value rather than book value, limited mileage, leisure use only, and secure storage requirements. Vintage motorcycle insurance in Spain starts from approximately €40-€60/year for third party cover and €120-€200/year for agreed value all-risk cover. We insure both classic cars and vintage motorcycles — see our motorbike insurance Spain page or call us on 966 461 625 to discuss your specific bike.
