Spanish Insurance Law: Van Insurance — Key Facts, Limits & Exclusions

The legal framework, specific waiting periods, exclusions and citations every prospective policyholder should know. Sources are linked inline to the BOE (Boletín Oficial del Estado) and Spanish regulators.

Legal framework

Commercial van insurance in Spain falls under the same RDL 8/2004 as cars: compulsory third-party cover with the same €70 million personal injury / €15 million property damage minimums. Vans used for paid carriage of goods may need additional tarjeta de transporte certification under Real Decreto 1211/1990 (LOTT), depending on weight and operation type.

Vehicle classification matters

Spanish vehicle classification (in the Permiso de Circulación) determines which policy you need. Vans up to 3,500 kg MMA classified as furgoneta mixta adaptable can be insured on a private/commercial van policy. Above 3,500 kg or classified as camión requires commercial-vehicle cover with HGV-grade liability. For mixed personal/business use, declare both — undeclared commercial use voids cover under Ley 50/1980 Article 11.

Tools-in-van and goods-in-transit

Standard van policies do not automatically cover tools or goods inside the van — these are excluded unless added. Tools-in-van cover typically pays up to €2,000–€3,000 for theft of tools while the van is parked, with conditions: tools must be locked away (not visible), the van itself must show signs of forced entry, and there is usually a night-time exclusion (theft between 22:00–06:00 from street parking is often excluded). Goods-in-transit is a separate cover for goods you carry on behalf of clients — see our transport insurance page.

Standard exclusions

Beyond the standard motor exclusions: commercial use not declared at policy inception; carriage of dangerous goods (ADR cover required separately); vehicle modifications not declared (refrigeration, hydraulic lifts, racking); drivers under 25 or with less than 2 years' licence on commercial use; and any incident where the van exceeded its declared maximum loaded weight.

Van Insurance Spain — Generali Furgoneta

Van insurance Spain (Seguro de Furgoneta y Vehículo Comercial) is a dedicated policy for vans, light commercial vehicles and people carriers used for both personal and business purposes. Whether you use your van for deliveries, a trades business, transporting equipment, or simply as a personal vehicle, Generali provides flexible van insurance with the same quality cover as its car insurance. Adapted for the specific risks of commercial and mixed-use vehicles.

All vans registered in Spain must have valid insurance. Spanish law requires all vehicles on public roads — including vans left parked on private land — to carry at minimum third-party civil liability insurance. Driving an uninsured van carries fines of €500–€1,500, vehicle impoundment and potential licence suspension. Get a van insurance quote →

Frequently Asked Questions — Van Insurance in Spain

Spanish van insurance is more complex than car insurance because of how vans are classified, used and modified. These answers cover the key issues for British and Irish trades and businesses on the Costa Blanca.

Vans are classified by Spanish Tráfico as 'industriales' (commercial vehicles) and require specific commercial insurance distinct from car insurance. The classification depends on chassis, factory designation and the use you put the van to. A van used as a personal vehicle for camping/leisure may need to be re-classified as a 'turismo' on the Permiso de Circulación. Mis-classification (e.g. running a trade van on car insurance) voids cover.
Strictly, yes — Spanish law looks at the vehicle classification on the Permiso de Circulación, not the actual use. A van registered as 'industrial' must hold commercial cover even for private use. The premium is typically only marginally higher than personal-use commercial cover. Some vans (4x4 conversions, leisure conversions) can be re-registered as turismo, which does allow personal car insurance — we advise on the right route.
Yes, but with strict conditions: the van must be locked, the tools usually need to be in a locked compartment or out of view, the van must be parked off-street overnight (in a garage, locked yard, or after-hours within a security-fenced area). Tools cover is typically €1,000-€3,000 depending on the policy, with sub-limits per item (often €500 max for any single tool unless specifically declared).
Standard tools cover is for YOUR tools. Other people's goods (a customer's appliances you're delivering, a job's materials in transit) need 'goods in transit' cover — a specific extension. Cover ranges typically €1,500-€10,000 per load with annual limits. For full-time delivery work, dedicated transport insurance is more appropriate (see our transport insurance page).
Yes, provided your UK licence has the correct categories — Category B (cars and light vans up to 3,500 kg) for a typical trade van, Category C1 (vans 3,500-7,500 kg) for a larger van, or Category C for HGVs. The same UK-Spain licence exchange rules apply as for car insurance — exchange to a Spanish licence within 6 months of becoming Spanish-resident. Some insurers ask for a CAP (Certificate of Professional Competence) for full-time commercial driving.
Conversion vans (van-with-bed-and-kitchen) are an unusual case. If the van remains classified as 'industrial' on the Permiso de Circulación, you need commercial cover. If it has been formally re-classified as 'autocaravana' (motorhome), you need motorhome insurance instead. The reclassification process at Tráfico requires an ITV inspection of the conversion. Mis-insured converted vans are a common claim-decline reason — we advise on the correct route.
The same matriculación process as imported cars: ITV technical inspection, change of classification by Spanish Tráfico, transit-plate insurance during the process, Spanish plates issued at completion. Right-hand drive UK vans are accepted in Spain with no premium loading from most insurers, provided headlight beam pattern is corrected (which the ITV checks). Vans are generally easier to import than cars because they have less complex emissions paperwork.
Yes — autónomo van insurance is required if the van is registered to you as a sole trader and used for your work (electricians, plumbers, carpenters, gardeners, etc.). Premium is typically the same as a small business policy. Important: the van usually cannot also be registered as a personal turismo unless it has been formally reclassified, so you need to choose one classification. The autónomo cover allows you to claim the premium as a business expense against IRPF.
Loading and unloading is one of the highest-claim moments — dropped items, damage to property, injury to bystanders. Standard van comprehensive includes loading/unloading cover for damage caused to your van or to others. Damage to the customer's premises (e.g. you scrape a wall while reversing in to deliver) is covered under your liability. Damage to the goods themselves while loading/unloading is covered only under specific goods-in-transit terms.
Yes — most fleet vans have 2-3 named drivers (employees, family). Each must hold the appropriate licence category. Adding a second driver typically adds 5-15% to the premium; adding a young or inexperienced driver can add much more. For 3+ vehicles or many drivers, switch to a fleet policy (see our fleet insurance page) for substantial savings.
Most Spanish van comprehensive policies include 24/7 European breakdown via a network like RACE or Mondial Assistance — towing, replacement van where possible, alternative accommodation if breakdown is far from home. Trade vans on full-time commercial work usually want extended breakdown including towing the van's load (the goods you're carrying), which is sometimes a separate extension.
Vans have shorter ITV intervals than cars: 2 years from new for the first 6 years, then annually. Heavier vans (>3,500 kg) have annual ITVs from new. The insurance is invalid if the ITV has expired — keep yours current. We send renewal reminders for ITV on policies we manage. The Marina Alta has ITV stations in Dénia and Benitachell.
Standard van insurance does not cover the catering equipment, food preparation activities, or public liability arising from food sales. Mobile food truck operators need: van insurance for the vehicle, goods-in-transit for the equipment, public liability for selling to public, and product liability for the food itself. We arrange combined mobile catering policies for Costa Blanca food truck and event catering operators.
Standalone van comprehensive covers fire/theft/accident damage to the refrigeration unit. What it does NOT cover by default is the spoilage of refrigerated goods if the unit fails (e.g. compressor breaks, perishables ruined). 'Frigorífico' add-on cover is available for chilled and frozen goods spoilage — important for catering and food delivery trades. Premium is typically €100-€300/year for the add-on.
Trade vans get priority on claims because the loss of the van means lost income. We arrange same-day collection by recovery, courtesy van delivery the next morning where available, and direct billing to network workshops so you don't pay upfront. For a total loss, the GANVAM valuation is normally agreed within 7 days (versus 2-3 weeks on a car claim) so you can replace the van quickly.
In Spain, vans are classified as either industrial (commercial/goods vehicles) or turismo (passenger vehicles) based on the vehicle's official registration data and use. This classification affects ITV inspection intervals, road tax and insurance. Most vans — including Transit, Trafic, Vito, Vivaro and similar — are registered as industrial vehicles, which means different insurance rates and underwriting rules than private cars. If your van is used for both business and personal use, you need to declare this at application — a policy issued for pure private use does not cover commercial activity. We always confirm the correct classification at quotation.
Yes — but you must declare mixed use at the time of application. A Spanish furgoneta policy can cover both personal and commercial use in one policy, but the insurer must be informed of the types of goods carried, whether employees drive the van, and the business activity involved. Undeclared commercial use is a common reason for claims being reduced or declined in Spain. Certain specialist uses — refrigerated transport, hazardous goods, waste, livestock — require specific endorsements. Self-employed (autónomos) using a van for their business should always take out a policy that explicitly covers their stated trade.
Van insurance in Spain typically costs €400–€900/year for a standard commercial van (Ford Transit, Renault Trafic, VW Transporter), driver 30-55, no recent claims, terceros ampliado cover. Comprehensive (todo riesgo) policies for a newer van typically cost €600–€1,200/year. Factors affecting cost: driver age and claims history, van value and load capacity, use (courier/delivery vans cost more than tradespeople's vans), whether other drivers are named, and annual mileage. We arrange van insurance for tradespeople, couriers, retailers and general commercial users across the Costa Blanca.
