How to make a marine / boat insurance claim in Spain

Marine insurance (seguro de embarcaciones) covers your boat — damage to the hull, engine and equipment, theft, fire, and your civil liability to other vessels and people. The right first steps depend on whether the incident happened at sea or in port, but the documentation and process are broadly the same.

1. Safety first, then evidence

If anyone is in danger or there’s a serious incident at sea, contact the emergency services / maritime rescue (112, or SASEMAR on 900 202 202) before anything else. Once safe, photograph the damage and the scene, note the time, position and weather, and record the details of any other vessel or party involved.

2. Notify Generali quickly

Report the claim within about 7 days via the claims line or MI GENERALI portal above, or call us to open it in English. For theft, file a police denuncia. For incidents involving another vessel, a grounding or pollution, the Capitanía Marítima (harbour master) may need to be informed — we’ll advise.

3. The surveyor (perito)

For anything significant, a marine perito inspects the boat, agrees the cause and scope and sets the settlement. Don’t authorise permanent repairs or scrap damaged parts until they’ve been assessed — though you should take reasonable steps to prevent further damage (for example hauling out or securing the vessel).

Documentation you’ll usually need

Third-party liability: if your boat damages another vessel, a mooring or injures someone, report it promptly and don’t admit liability at the scene — leave that to the insurers’ surveyors. Your policy’s liability section is there for exactly this.

How Turner Insurance helps

Marine claims involve technical surveys and sometimes the maritime authorities — all in Spanish. As your Generali agent we open the claim, brief the surveyor, chase the file and keep you updated in plain English.

Storm and weather damage is normally covered, subject to your policy terms and any excess. Photograph everything, note the date of the storm and report it promptly — we’ll handle the rest.
Collisions, groundings, injuries or pollution at sea should be reported to the Capitanía Marítima. Minor dock knocks usually just go to the insurer. If unsure, call us first.
Do what’s needed to prevent further damage, but wait for the surveyor before permanent repairs — otherwise the settlement can be reduced. Keep all quotes and invoices.
