Pet insurance (seguro de mascotas) in Spain usually has two sides: veterinary cover for your animal’s treatment, and civil liability — which for dogs is now legally required under the 2023 Animal Welfare Law (Ley 7/2023). The claim process differs slightly between the two.
Vet treatment claims
There are two common models, depending on your policy:
- Network clinic (direct billing): at a clinic in the insurer’s network the covered amount may be billed directly, so you only pay the excess or any non-covered part.
- Reimbursement: at other vets you pay the bill and claim it back. Keep the itemised invoice (factura) and the clinical report (informe veterinario) describing diagnosis and treatment.
Submit the invoice and report to Generali (claims line or MI GENERALI portal above) promptly — or send them to us and we’ll file the claim in English. Keep your pet’s microchip number and vaccination record handy, as the insurer may ask for them.
Dog civil-liability claims
If your dog injures a person or another animal, or damages property, that’s a liability claim. Steps:
- Get the affected person’s contact details and any witnesses
- Take photos and note what happened, where and when
- For injuries, get the medical/vet report of the harm caused
- Don’t admit liability at the scene — report it to the insurer
