How to make a life insurance claim in Spain

A life insurance (seguro de vida) claim is made by the beneficiaries after the death of the insured person. It is a difficult time, so the aim of this guide is simply to make the process clear. As your Generali agent we handle the paperwork and liaise with the insurer in English, so the family can focus on what matters.

1. Notify the insurer

Let Generali know as soon as practical — you can use the claims line or MI GENERALI portal above, or call us and we’ll open the file for you. There is no rush in the first days; benefits are not lost by taking a little time to gather documents.

2. Gather the documents

The insurer will ask for proof of death and of who is entitled to claim. Typically that means:

3. Who receives the payout

The money goes to the beneficiaries named in the policy — which can differ from the heirs of the estate, so it’s worth checking your policy lists the people you intend. If the policy is linked to a mortgage, the benefit usually clears the outstanding loan first, with any balance going to the beneficiaries.

Tax: life insurance proceeds paid to beneficiaries are generally subject to Spanish inheritance & gift tax (Impuesto sobre Sucesiones y Donaciones), which varies a lot by region and relationship. We are not tax advisers, but we’ll point you to the right information and a gestor or asesor if you need one.

How Turner Insurance helps

We confirm exactly what Generali needs, submit the file, chase it through and keep the family informed in plain English — removing the language barrier at a hard time. If you simply want to check who the beneficiaries are on an existing policy, call us any time.

Once the insurer has the death certificate, cause-of-death certificate and beneficiary documents, straightforward claims are typically settled within a few weeks. We keep it moving.
Yes. The benefit is paid to whoever is named as beneficiary in the policy, which is independent of the will. It’s worth reviewing periodically — we can check it with you.
It can still be claimed; the insurer will usually need an officially translated/legalised death certificate. We’ll tell you exactly what’s required.
