How to claim on your home insurance in Spain

Home insurance (seguro de hogar) protects your building (continente), your contents (contenido) and your civil liability as an owner or tenant. Most expat claims fall into a handful of categories — water damage, storm, theft, broken glass, electrical surges and accidents that injure a third party. Here is how to claim and what to have ready.

1. Make it safe and stop the damage spreading

Turn off the water or power if needed, and take clear photos and video of the damage before you clean up or repair. Keep receipts for any urgent make-safe work — reasonable costs to limit the loss are normally covered. For theft or vandalism, file a denuncia (police report) as soon as possible: it is required for the claim.

2. Notify Generali quickly

Report the claim within about 7 days using the 24-hour Generali claims line or the MI GENERALI portal above — or call us and we’ll open and run it for you in English. Have your policy number, the date, and a short description of what happened.

3. The loss adjuster (perito)

Beyond minor amounts, Generali appoints a perito who inspects the damage, agrees the cause and scope and sets the settlement. Don’t throw away damaged items or do permanent repairs until they’ve been assessed. Keep a list of damaged contents with rough values and any proof of purchase you have.

Documentation you’ll usually need

Floods, severe storms and other catastrophic events are handled in Spain by the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros, funded by a surcharge already on your policy — not by Generali directly. We’ll tell you which route your claim takes and help you file it.

A note on underinsurance

If your sum insured is set too low for the rebuild cost, Spanish insurers can apply the regla proporcional — paying only the same proportion of a claim as you were insured. It’s worth checking your buildings figure reflects the cost to rebuild, not the market value. We’re happy to review it with you.

Yes. For theft, attempted break-in or vandalism you must file a denuncia at a police station (or online with the Policía Nacional/Guardia Civil) and give the reference to the insurer. We can guide you through it.
Report it to your own home insurer and note the suspected source. Your insurer and the neighbour’s (or the community’s) settle liability between them — you don’t have to argue it out yourself. We’ll coordinate it.
Simple claims are often settled within a few weeks after the perito’s visit. Larger or disputed claims take longer — we keep the file moving and translate every step.
