How to make a travel insurance claim in Spain

Travel insurance (seguro de viaje) covers medical emergencies abroad, trip cancellation or curtailment, lost or delayed baggage, and travel delays. The golden rule is the same for all of them: contact the assistance line as it happens and keep every document, because claims are paid on evidence.

Medical emergencies abroad

Call the insurer’s 24-hour emergency assistance line before treatment wherever possible — they can authorise care, arrange direct payment to the hospital and organise repatriation if needed. If you have to pay yourself, keep every invoice and the medical report. (Within the EU, also carry your EHIC/GHIC, which covers state care — your travel policy tops it up.)

Cancellation or cutting a trip short

Claims need proof of the reason — for example a medical certificate, a death certificate, or written confirmation from the airline/operator — plus the original booking invoices and proof of what was non-refundable. Tell the insurer as soon as you know you must cancel.

Lost, delayed or stolen baggage

Documentation checklist

Always call the 24-hour assistance line first for anything medical. Authorising treatment through the insurer usually means they pay the hospital directly — far easier than paying thousands yourself and reclaiming later. Don’t have the number to hand? Call us and we’ll get you to it.

How Turner Insurance helps

We confirm what your policy covers, point you to the right assistance line, and help you assemble and submit the claim to Generali in plain English — so a travel mishap doesn’t turn into a paperwork headache.

Try to call the 24-hour assistance line first — they can authorise treatment and pay the hospital directly. If you must pay, keep every invoice and the medical report and reclaim afterwards.
Get a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) from the airline desk before you leave the airport, and keep receipts for any essentials you buy. The PIR is essential for the claim.
Usually yes, if the reason is covered by your policy and you can evidence it (e.g. a medical certificate) plus the non-refundable costs. Tell the insurer as soon as you know — we’ll help you put it together.
