How to make a funeral insurance claim in Spain

Funeral insurance in Spain (seguro de decesos) is different from most policies: it is a service, not a reimbursement. When the insured person dies, the insurer organises and pays for the funeral directly through its network of funeral homes — so the family doesn’t have to find money up front or arrange everything alone.

1. Call the insurer’s 24-hour line first — before engaging a funeral home

This is the most important step. Call Generali’s claims line (above) before contracting any funeral director, so the insurer can assign one from its network and the costs are covered directly. If you’re unsure, call us and we’ll make the call with you, in English. The insurer then coordinates collection, paperwork, the ceremony and burial or cremation.

2. Documents the insurer will need

The funeral home, working with the insurer, handles the official death registration and the licencia de enterramiento (burial/cremation licence) as part of the service.

3. What’s typically included

A decesos policy generally covers the coffin, preparation, transport, ceremony and burial or cremation up to the insured amount, plus help with the paperwork. Many policies also include repatriation — returning the deceased to their home country — which is a key reason expats take this cover. Check whether your policy includes repatriation; we can confirm it for you.

Moving to Spain with an existing decesos policy? Cover and funeral-home networks are local, so it’s worth reviewing your policy when you relocate. We’re glad to check what you have and explain how it works here.

How Turner Insurance helps

Losing someone is hard enough without a language barrier and unfamiliar procedures. We can speak to Generali on the family’s behalf, make sure the right service is triggered and explain each step calmly in English.

No — that’s the key difference. A decesos policy provides the funeral as a service through the insurer’s network, paid directly. That’s why you should call the insurer before engaging a funeral home.
Many policies do, and it’s one of the main reasons expats hold this cover — but it varies by policy. Call us and we’ll confirm exactly what yours includes.
Contact the insurer’s 24-hour line straight away; assistance and (where covered) repatriation are coordinated from there. We can help you make that contact.
