Student Travel Insurance in Spain

Generali Viajes Estudios cover for students, teachers and monitors on courses, placements and study trips — including studying in Spain.

Student travel insurance (Generali's Viajes Estudios) is travel-assistance cover built for the realities of a long study trip rather than a one-week holiday. It protects students, teachers and monitors whose home is in Spain while they are away on a course or work placement — and it works the other way too, covering inbound students coming to Spain to study. Cover runs for the whole course and includes every trip you make during it.

What student travel insurance covers

Viajes Estudios shares the same core guarantee framework as the rest of the Generali travel range, adapted for study trips and built around your temporary accommodation (the residence or lodging where you stay during the course) rather than a hotel. The headline cover areas are below; the exact sums insured, territorial scope and policy period are set in your Particular Conditions and confirmed on your quote.

Cover areaWhat it includes
Medical & repatriationMedical, surgical, hospital, pharmacy and emergency dental costs abroad; medical transport and repatriation; extension of your stay in your temporary accommodation on medical advice (up to 14 days); repatriation of mortal remains.
Travel disruptionCover for travel incidents and disruption during the course or placement trip.
Baggage & documentsLoss, theft or damage to baggage and help with lost travel documents.
Civil liabilityPrivate (non-professional) civil liability while you are away studying.
Personal accidentDeath and disability benefits following a covered accident.
Assistance & legal services24-hour information service and information & legal services abroad.

For the full clause-by-clause detail of each guarantee, see the Viajes Estudios policy conditions in English.

Who it’s for

To be insured, students, teachers and monitors are named in the Particular Conditions and (for the standard cover) have their habitual home in Spain.

Why it differs from ordinary travel insurance

On top of the standard travel guarantees, Viajes Estudios adds features that matter on a long study trip:

Enhanced cover for minors

If an insured minor is hospitalised, Generali arranges and pays for two people to travel from the home country — from the 2nd day of hospitalisation rather than the 5th — and pays for their stay. If a minor must stay in their accommodation on medical advice with no close relative present, cover is provided for someone to come and stay with them.

Course-fee protection

If the person you depend on financially dies in an accident and you continue an unfunded (non-grant) course, Generali indemnifies the outstanding, unpaid course fees. Nothing is payable where the course has already been paid in full.

Early return for studies

The early-return cover takes your studies into account — for example where at least 30 days of the stay remain, or where you have to sit an essential exam to obtain your qualification.

Studying in Spain too

The inbound “Receptivo” option covers students coming to Spain. Wherever the conditions refer to “Spain”, for an inbound insured it means their own country of origin instead.

Sports, pre-existing conditions and limits

Recreational sports are covered where you take part as an unpaid amateur, it is not the purpose of the trip and not in competition, subject to the usual altitude, diving-depth and high-risk limits. Combat and high-impact sports — boxing, weightlifting, wrestling, karate, kickboxing, Muay Thai, judo and similar martial arts — are excluded. Pre-existing conditions are excluded unless the optional pre-existing module is held, though a genuine vital emergency is still assisted. If you are studying in the USA, Canada or another high-cost region, check your medical limit is adequate (we recommend a minimum of €1,000,000).

Important: the sums insured, territorial scope and the policy period (it should run for the full length of your course or placement) are confirmed on your Particular Conditions and quote — not assumed. Tell us where you are studying, for how long, and the ages of those insured, and we will set the cover and limits to match before you travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Generali's Viajes Estudios policy covers students, teachers and monitors named in the policy who are travelling on a course or work placement. For the standard cover, the insured person's habitual home is in Spain. There is also an inbound ("Receptivo") option for students whose home is abroad who are coming to study in Spain.
Yes. The inbound "Receptivo" option covers trips to Spain where the insured's home country is elsewhere. In that case, wherever the policy refers to "Spain" it is read as the insured's own country of origin, so the assistance and repatriation cover works in the right direction.
If the person you depend on financially dies in an accident and you carry on with an unfunded (non-grant) course, Generali indemnifies the outstanding, unpaid course fees. If the course has already been paid in full, nothing is payable under this benefit because there is no unpaid balance to protect.
If an insured minor is hospitalised, Generali arranges and pays for two people to travel from the home country — starting from the 2nd day of hospitalisation rather than the 5th — plus their stay. If a minor must remain in their accommodation on medical advice without a close relative present, cover is provided for someone to come and stay with them.
Pre-existing conditions are excluded unless you hold the optional pre-existing module. Even without it, a genuine vital (life-threatening) emergency is still assisted. If you have a known condition, tell us when you get a quote so the right module can be added.
Recreational sports are covered when you take part as an unpaid amateur, it is not the purpose of the trip and not in competition, within the usual altitude, diving-depth and high-risk limits. Combat and high-impact sports such as boxing, weightlifting, wrestling, karate, kickboxing, Muay Thai, judo and similar martial arts are excluded.
