Insurance for Expats in Mijas — Generali, in English

Mijas is one of Spain's most-visited white villages — a hilltop pueblo blanco famous for its panoramic views of the Costa del Sol, its traditional donkey taxi rides, and its Plaza de Toros (one of Spain's few square bullrings). Mijas Pueblo sits at around 430 metres above sea level in the hills behind Fuengirola. But Mijas is also one of the largest municipalities on the Costa del Sol: Mijas Costa is the sprawling seafront development that extends along the coast from Fuengirola towards Marbella, taking in popular areas such as Calahonda, Riviera del Sol and La Cala de Mijas.

The British expat community in Mijas is enormous — one of the largest in Spain — particularly in Mijas Costa and the golf resort areas around La Cala, Miraflores and Cabopino. Many residents have lived here for decades. The golf is legendary: La Cala Resort, Miraflores, Calanova, Chaparral and dozens more courses are within minutes of most Mijas addresses.

Two property types dominate: the historic buildings of Mijas Pueblo (with higher historic rebuild costs) and the villas, townhouses and apartments of Mijas Costa (with community insurance obligations for complexes). Turner Insurance handles both. Andrew Turner, Generali agent since 2007, DGS registry C0467B54657010. English throughout, arranged by phone, email and WhatsApp.

About Mijas & Mijas Costa

Mijas Pueblo is the postcard version of Andalusia — a compact hilltop white village of cobbled streets, flower-filled balconies and dramatic panoramic views stretching across the Costa del Sol to Africa on a clear day. The Plaza de Toros here is one of very few square bullrings in Spain. The famous donkey taxis — burros taxi — have been a village institution for decades. The village itself is small; the municipality it belongs to is enormous.

Mijas Costa is the long coastal strip stretching from Fuengirola westward to the Marbella boundary, encompassing a succession of resort developments, golf communities and residential urbanisations. Key areas include La Cala de Mijas (a small fishing village turned expat hub), Calahonda, Riviera del Sol, Miraflores and Cabopino (with its own small marina). The golf courses are world-class: La Cala Resort alone has three 18-hole courses.

Las Lagunas de Mijas is the flat commercial centre of the municipality — home to supermarkets, car showrooms, industrial units and services that support the whole area. The British expat population across Mijas municipality is one of the largest concentrated communities anywhere in Europe.

Local Insurance Considerations in Mijas

Mijas covers a huge area with very different property types and risk profiles. A few local factors are worth getting right:

  • Mijas Pueblo historic buildings: the traditional buildings of the white village often have higher rebuild costs than modern construction. Insuring on the correct rebuild value — not the market price — is especially important here.
  • Golf community complexes: the large villa and apartment complexes surrounding Mijas Costa's golf courses are comunidades de propietarios — community insurance is mandatory for the building structure, and individual policies cover contents and personal liability.
  • Hillside wildfire exposure: Mijas Pueblo and the surrounding sierra are a genuine wildfire zone in dry summers. Properties on the village hillside and in nearby countryside should declare their location carefully.
  • Holiday-home and rental properties: a large proportion of properties in Mijas Costa are short-term holiday rentals. Standard home policies do not cover holiday letting — the correct occupancy basis and tenant liability cover must be built in at quotation.
The golden rule: always insure your Mijas property on its rebuild value, not its market or purchase price. Under the Spanish regla proporcional, a home insured below rebuild value has every claim reduced in proportion to the shortfall. This is particularly important for historic Mijas Pueblo buildings. We calculate the correct figure for you at quotation, at no charge.

Frequently Asked Questions — Insurance in Mijas

Most expats start with the three essentials — home insurance, car insurance and private health insurance. In Mijas Pueblo, home insurance needs to reflect the higher rebuild costs of the village's historic buildings. In Mijas Costa, many residents live in apartment complexes or golf resort communities where community insurance is mandatory for the building structure, with an individual policy for contents and liability. Holiday-rental properties need specially structured cover. Many clients then add life insurance, funeral insurance and travel insurance.
Yes. A standard home insurance policy in Spain is not designed for properties that are regularly let to holiday tenants. You need a policy that explicitly permits holiday letting, covers tenant and guest liability, and includes contents cover appropriate for a furnished rental. Getting this wrong is one of the most common reasons claims are disputed or reduced. We always confirm the correct usage basis at quotation.
Yes. The traditional whitewashed buildings of Mijas Pueblo often have higher rebuild costs than modern construction because of the materials, age and craftsmanship involved. It is especially important to insure these properties on their correct rebuild value — not their market price. The Spanish regla proporcional means that if you insure below rebuild value, every claim is reduced in proportion to the shortfall. We calculate the correct rebuild figure for you at no charge.
Yes. All insurance is arranged entirely in English — policies, documents and every conversation.
