Málaga — Andalusia's Second City and the Gateway to the Costa del Sol

Málaga has spent the last decade turning itself from an airport people passed through into a city they move to. Close to 600,000 people live here, in a province where roughly 23% of residents are foreign nationals, and the city now runs on museums, technology and remote work as much as on tourism: the historic centre and the Alcazaba, Soho, the port and Muelle Uno, the university and tech quarter at Teatinos, and the old fishing barrios of Pedregalejo and El Palo along the eastern seafront. Málaga-Costa del Sol airport, ten minutes west, is what makes all of it possible.

Turner Insurance is an authorised exclusive Generali agent with over 25 years of insurance experience, arranging cover for expats across the whole of Spain — and the Costa del Sol is one of our strongest regions, with dedicated town pages from Nerja to Estepona. Everything is handled by phone, email and WhatsApp, entirely in English: quotes, policy documents, renewals and claims. Our office is in Javea, but nothing about arranging cover in Málaga requires you to be anywhere near it.

Local Insurance Considerations in Málaga

Málaga's risks are a city's risks plus an Andalusian riverbed. The points we raise most often:

  • The Guadalmedina: the river runs straight through the middle of Málaga and is dry or near-dry for most of the year — which is exactly why it is easy to forget what it is. The province has had two hard reminders recently: severe flooding in November 2024 around Álora, Cártama and Campanillas, and flash floods in March 2025 that forced hundreds of homes to be evacuated. Flood is a Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros risk, payable only where a valid policy is in force and only up to the sums insured declared in it.
  • Flats and communities: most city policies are contents, improvements and liability, with the structure on the block's comunidad de propietarios policy. Underground garages are the part of a community policy worth checking before, not after, a storm.
  • Holiday lets: Málaga has one of the densest short-let markets in Spain. A standard seguro de hogar does not cover paying guests — you need tourist rental cover, which handles guest liability and the damage a standard policy will decline.
  • Health network: the public reference hospitals are the Hospital Regional Universitario de Málaga (still universally called Carlos Haya) and the Hospital Universitario Virgen de la Victoria. The private network across the city and the western Costa del Sol is extensive, which makes a Generali cuadro médico plan good value here.
  • Cars in a city: parking damage, theft and vandalism all run higher than in a coastal town, so the step from bare terceros to terceros ampliado — glass, fire, theft and breakdown — is worth more in Málaga than on the urbanisations.
  • Sum-insured accuracy: under the regla proporcional, insuring below true rebuild value cuts every claim in proportion — including a Consorcio flood settlement. We calculate the correct figure at quotation, free of charge.

West of the city we cover Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, San Pedro de Alcántara and Estepona; east of it, Nerja. The regional overview is our Costa del Sol hub.

Frequently Asked Questions — Insurance in Málaga

Both. We have dedicated town pages from Nerja in the east to Estepona in the west, plus a Costa del Sol regional hub, and Málaga city itself is covered on exactly the same basis. Turner Insurance is an authorised exclusive Generali agent; quotes, policies, renewals and claims are handled by phone, email and WhatsApp in English, so the fact that our office is on the Costa Blanca makes no practical difference to a Málaga client.
Yes, through the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros — Spain's state extraordinary-risks fund, financed by a small surcharge collected on your ordinary policy. It pays only where a valid policy was in force at the time, and only up to the sums insured declared in that policy. Given the Guadalmedina runs through the city, and the province flooded severely in November 2024 and again in March 2025, both of those conditions are worth checking rather than assuming.
No. A standard seguro de hogar is written on the assumption that the occupants are you and your household. Paying guests change the risk and, more importantly, change the liability: an injured guest is a claim a standard policy will decline. Tourist rental insurance is written for exactly this, covering guest liability, malicious damage and the loss of rental income. If you let long term instead, landlord cover is the right product.
The public reference hospitals are the Hospital Regional Universitario de Málaga — almost everyone still calls it Carlos Haya — and the Hospital Universitario Virgen de la Victoria. The private network across the city and the western coast is one of the largest in Spain, which is why a Generali cuadro médico plan usually beats a reembolso plan on value here. We confirm the network for your postcode before you commit.
Usually a little, yes. City density brings more parking damage, more low-speed collisions, more vandalism and higher theft rates than a resort urbanisation, and premiums follow. The practical answer is not to buy less cover but to buy the right cover: the step from bare terceros to terceros ampliado, adding glass, fire, theft and 24-hour breakdown, is better value in the city than almost anywhere. See our car insurance page.
In practice: health cover if your residency route requires it, home cover from the day you complete or move in, and motor cover from the day the car is yours. If you are applying on a non-lucrative or digital nomad visa the health policy must have no copayments and no waiting periods, and we issue the certificate in the format the consulate expects, usually within 24 to 48 hours. Call us and we will work through the order things need to happen in.
Andalusia is relatively generous to direct family, but the practical problem is timing rather than rate: Spanish inheritance tax is generally due within six months of death, often before the property can be transferred or accounts released. A life policy with nominated beneficiaries pays quickly and directly, which is usually what actually solves the problem. Our Spanish inheritance tax hub covers all 17 regions.
Yes. Every quote, policy document and claim is handled in plain English, and we deal with the Spanish paperwork and with Generali on your behalf. That is the part that matters when something has gone wrong and you would rather not be explaining it to a claims department in Spanish.
