Insurance for Expats on the Costa del Sol — Generali, in English

The Costa del Sol is home to one of the largest concentrations of English-speaking residents in Europe. Along roughly 150 kilometres of Málaga-province coastline — from Nerja in the east, through Fuengirola, Benalmádena and Mijas, to Marbella and Estepona in the west — hundreds of thousands of British, Irish, Scandinavian, Dutch and German expats own homes, run businesses, raise families and retire in the sun. Every one of them needs insurance that actually works when it matters — and paperwork they can understand.

Turner Insurance arranges all cover for Costa del Sol residents and property owners by phone, email and WhatsApp. Generali is a national insurer, so the coverage and premiums are identical wherever you are in Spain — and many clients on the Costa del Sol find dealing with an English-speaking specialist remotely far more straightforward than navigating a local office where Spanish is the working language. Andrew Turner has been an exclusive Generali agent since 2007, DGS registry C0467B54657010. English throughout — the policy, the documents and any claim.

Car Insurance on the Costa del Sol

Car insurance is the cover Costa del Sol expats ask us about most. Whether you drive the A-7 coast road daily, keep a runaround at a holiday home, or have just moved over and need to insure a Spanish-registered car for the first time, we arrange Generali car insurance at every level — from third-party (terceros) to fully comprehensive (todo riesgo) — with the policy, documents and claims all handled in English.

  • Your no-claims bonus counts. UK, EU, Canadian and US no-claims records can usually be recognised, so your premium drops from day one.
  • Not sure which cover level? Our plain-English guide to terceros vs todo riesgo explains exactly what each tier protects and how to choose.
  • Driving into Málaga? The city operates a low-emission zone — see our guide to the DGT environmental sticker and ZBE zones.

About the Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol runs along the Mediterranean coast of Málaga province in Andalusia, sheltered by mountains that give it one of the mildest winter climates in mainland Europe — the famous 320-plus days of sunshine a year. International tourism arrived in the 1950s and never left: today the coast is a year-round home to one of the world's great expat communities, with Fuengirola, Mijas and Benalmádena among the municipalities with the largest British-born populations anywhere in Spain, and Marbella drawing an international mix from Scandinavia, the Gulf, the Netherlands and beyond.

Málaga airport — the busiest in Andalusia — connects the coast to the UK and Ireland with dozens of daily flights, which is a large part of why the holiday-home market here is so strong. The coast is also golf's Spanish heartland: the stretch west of Marbella is nicknamed the Costa del Golf, with more than 70 courses within an hour's drive. Add the marinas — Puerto Banús, Puerto Marina Benalmádena, Estepona and Fuengirola — and a large share of Costa del Sol households have a home, a car, a boat or all three to insure.

Local Insurance Considerations on the Costa del Sol

Insuring on this coast comes with a handful of regional specifics worth getting right:

  • Wildfire exposure in the hills: the wooded slopes behind the coast — Sierra Bermeja above Estepona, Sierra Blanca above Marbella, the Mijas hills — are genuine wildfire interface zones, as the 2021 Sierra Bermeja fire showed. Hillside villas and urbanisations need their location declared correctly and outbuildings, pools and garden structures properly covered.
  • Torrential rain and flash flooding: autumn downpours regularly flood the coast's dry riverbeds and underpasses. Catastrophic flood damage in Spain is paid by the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros — but only if you hold a valid policy when the water arrives.
  • High-value property means high rebuild values: in Marbella, the Golden Mile and parts of Estepona's New Golden Mile, rebuild costs are among the highest in Spain. Under-insuring triggers the regla proporcional — every claim reduced in proportion. We calculate the correct rebuild figure at quotation, free.
  • Holiday homes left empty: lock-up-and-leave properties need the correct declared-unoccupancy terms — a standard policy's 30-day clause is not enough for a home used a few weeks a year. Our holiday home insurance is built for exactly this, and our squatters guide covers the empty-property risk owners worry about most.
  • Boats and marinas: berth contracts at the coast's marinas require third-party liability as a minimum. We arrange marine insurance from jet-skis to yachts, entirely remotely.
One agent for the whole coast: Generali is a national insurer — cover and premiums are identical whether you are in Nerja or Estepona. We look after clients along the entire Costa del Sol from our Javea office, in English, by phone and WhatsApp.

Frequently Asked Questions — Insurance on the Costa del Sol

Most Costa del Sol expats need home or holiday-home insurance built on the correct rebuild value, car insurance, private health insurance, and life or funeral cover. Boat owners at the coast's marinas also need marine cover, and apartment owners should check how their community policy dovetails with their own. We arrange all of these through Generali, in English, by phone and WhatsApp.
All of them. We have dedicated pages for Marbella, Estepona, Fuengirola, Benalmádena, Mijas, Nerja and San Pedro de Alcántara, but Generali is a national insurer — we arrange identical cover anywhere on the coast, from Manilva to Torrox, and throughout the rest of Spain.
Yes. We arrange Generali car insurance at every level — third-party (terceros), third-party plus fire and theft, and fully comprehensive (todo riesgo) — with the policy, documents and any claim handled in English. Your UK, EU, Canadian or US no-claims bonus can usually be recognised, so you keep the discount you have already earned.
No. We look after Costa del Sol clients entirely remotely — by phone, email and WhatsApp — from our Javea office. Generali's cover and premiums are identical throughout Spain, and every document and claim is handled in English. Most clients find this far easier than visiting a local office where Spanish is the working language.
Yes. We handle luxury property cover including high rebuild values and full contents declarations — jewellery, art and high-value items individually listed. The key risk on this coast is under-insurance: a villa insured below its rebuild cost sees every claim reduced under the regla proporcional. We establish the correct rebuild value at quotation, at no charge.
Only if the policy doesn't know. A standard home policy typically expects the property occupied within a 30-day unoccupancy clause; a declared holiday home is covered on different terms designed for lock-up-and-leave use. Tell us how you use the property and we will set it up correctly — see our holiday home insurance page for the details.
We arrange Generali marine insurance covering hull, third-party liability and equipment for craft at all the Costa del Sol marinas — Puerto Banús, Puerto Marina Benalmádena, Estepona, Fuengirola and the rest. Marina berth contracts require liability cover as a minimum. Everything is arranged remotely, in English.
A UK Form S1 gives UK state pensioners access to the Spanish public health system, so you are not legally obliged to hold private cover. Many Costa del Sol residents still take a private Generali policy for faster appointments, the coast's excellent private hospitals and English-speaking doctors. If you do not qualify for an S1, you will generally need private health insurance to support a residency application.
