Alicante — the Provincial Capital, and Our Own Province

Alicante is the capital of the province this agency is registered in, and by some distance the most complete city on the Costa Blanca: a working port and cruise terminal, the Explanada de España, the Castillo de Santa Bárbara on Benacantil, the Barrio de Santa Cruz, the Postiguet beach in the middle of town and the long high-rise seafront at Playa de San Juan and Albufereta. Around 372,000 people live here, and roughly a quarter of them — 24.3% at 1 January 2025 — hold a foreign nationality, a mix that has shifted well beyond the traditional northern-European retirement profile towards younger working residents, students and remote workers.

Turner Insurance is an authorised exclusive Generali agent registered in Alicante province, with Andrew Turner a mediador colegiado of the Colegio de Mediadores de Seguros de Alicante and over 25 years of insurance experience. The office is in Javea, about an hour up the coast, but almost all business — quotes, documents, renewals and claims — is handled by phone, email and WhatsApp, entirely in English. There is no need to travel to arrange cover in Alicante city.

Local Insurance Considerations in Alicante

City cover is a different problem from coastal-villa cover. These are the points that come up most often with Alicante clients:

  • Flats, not houses: most Alicante policies are contents-and-liability rather than full buildings cover, because the structure sits on the comunidad de propietarios policy. The two most common errors are assuming the community policy covers the inside of your flat (it does not) and forgetting to insure fitted improvements you paid for yourself.
  • Water damage between neighbours: in dense blocks the classic claim is a leak that damages the flat below. That is a civil liability question as much as a buildings one, and the limit on your policy is what decides how comfortable the conversation with your neighbour is.
  • Storm and flash flood: Alicante's barrancos — Las Ovejas and Juan XXIII among them — carry very little water for most of the year and a great deal of it during a DANA. Flood and storm damage above the legal threshold are Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros events, payable only where a valid policy is in force and only up to the sums insured declared in it.
  • Seismic exposure to the south: the Bajo Segura fault zone behind the historic 1829 Torrevieja earthquake lies south of the city. The exposure at Alicante is modest, but earthquake is also a Consorcio risk — again, only with a policy in force.
  • Second homes at San Juan and Albufereta: much of the seafront apartment stock is used seasonally. Standard policies expect occupation every 30–60 days, so declared holiday home terms, or tourist rental cover if you let it out, is the correct structure rather than a standard hogar policy.
  • Health network: the public referral hospital is the Hospital General Universitario Dr. Balmis (around 800 beds), with Hospital Universitario de Sant Joan d'Alacant serving the north of the city. Privately, Alicante has one of the deepest networks in the region, which makes a cuadro médico plan good value here.
  • Cars in a city: theft, vandalism and parking damage are all more likely than on the coast, so the gap between bare terceros and terceros ampliado is worth more in Alicante than almost anywhere else we cover.

Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández airport is around ten minutes from the city, which is why annual multi-trip travel insurance is so popular with residents here; the TRAM runs north along the coast to El Campello, Benidorm and Dénia.

Frequently Asked Questions — Insurance in Alicante

Alicante city very much included — it is the capital of the province this agency is registered in. Turner Insurance is an authorised exclusive Generali agent with the office in Javea, and Andrew Turner is a mediador colegiado of the Colegio de Mediadores de Seguros de Alicante. Quotes, policies, renewals and claims are handled by phone, email and WhatsApp in English, so there is nothing you need to travel for. We also cover the rest of Spain the same way.
Usually contents, fitted improvements and civil liability, rather than full buildings cover: the structure and common areas sit on the block's comunidad de propietarios policy. What that community policy will not do is replace your furniture, cover the kitchen you installed, pay your liability if your bathroom leaks into the flat below, or rehouse you while repairs are done. We look at the community policy alongside yours so the two meet without a gap and without paying twice.
Flood, storm above the legal wind threshold and earthquake are extraordinary risks in Spain, paid by the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros rather than by the insurer directly — funded by a small surcharge on your ordinary policy. Two things decide whether you are actually protected: a valid policy must be in force when it happens, and the Consorcio settles on the sums insured declared in that policy. An underinsured home is underinsured for the DANA too. We check both figures at quotation.
The public referral hospital for most of the city is the Hospital General Universitario Dr. Balmis, with Hospital Universitario de Sant Joan d'Alacant serving the northern districts. Privately, Alicante has one of the widest networks in the Comunidad Valenciana, which is why a Generali cuadro médico plan usually gives better value here than a reembolso plan. We confirm the current network for your postcode before you commit — see our health insurance page.
Generally yes, modestly. Urban density means more low-speed collisions, more parking damage, more vandalism and higher theft rates than in a coastal town, and premiums reflect it. The practical consequence is that the step up from bare terceros to terceros ampliado — adding glass, fire, theft and breakdown — is better value in the city than almost anywhere else we quote. See our car insurance page.
Yes, and it is easily fixed. Standard Spanish home policies assume regular occupation, typically expecting a visit every 30 to 60 days, and can reduce escape-of-water and theft claims outside that. If the flat is a second home, a declared holiday home policy is the correct structure; if you let it to tourists, you need tourist rental cover instead, which also handles guest liability. Tell us how the property is really used.
For a non-lucrative visa, a digital nomad visa and most student visas, yes — and the policy must have no copayments and no waiting periods, with full cover in Spain, or the consulate will reject it. Generali's visa-compliant plans meet that specification and we issue the certificate in the expected format, usually within 24 to 48 hours. EU nationals with reciprocal cover and UK state pensioners holding a Form S1 are in different positions; call us and we will tell you which applies.
Yes. Every quote, policy document and claim is handled in plain English, and we deal with the Spanish paperwork and with Generali on your behalf — which is the part that matters when something has gone wrong and you are trying to explain it in a second language.
