Murcia — the Huerta City, the Segura and the Costa Cálida Behind It

Murcia is a city of close to half a million people built on the Segura and surrounded by the huerta — the irrigated market-garden plain that has defined the region since the Moors engineered its water. The cathedral and the Glorieta sit at the centre; around them are the university, the Malecón, and a metropolitan sprawl of pedanías reaching out into the orchards. Beyond the city lies the Costa Cálida — the Mar Menor, Los Alcázares, San Javier and Mazarrón — where much of the region's northern-European community actually lives.

Turner Insurance is an authorised exclusive Generali agent with over 25 years of insurance experience, arranging cover for expats across the whole of Spain. We already run dedicated town pages for Los Alcázares and Mazarrón on the Murcian coast, and the city itself is covered on the same basis: quotes, policy documents, renewals and claims handled by phone, email and WhatsApp, entirely in English.

Local Insurance Considerations in Murcia

Murcia is the one region where both of Spain's headline catastrophe risks — flood and earthquake — are genuinely live. That shapes everything about how cover should be set up here:

  • The Segura: over half a million people in Murcia and Alicante live in flood-prone areas of the Segura basin, and the river has a long, documented record of doing damage — major floods in 1946, 1948, 1973, 1978 and 1989, and the September 2019 DANA that overwhelmed the Vega Baja and the Mar Menor towns. Flood is a Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros risk: paid only where a valid ordinary policy is in force, and only up to the sums insured declared in it.
  • Earthquake — not a theoretical risk here: the Region of Murcia sits on the contact between the Eurasian and African plates and is the most seismically active part of Spain. The Lorca earthquake of 11 May 2011 (magnitude 5.1) killed nine people, injured more than 300 and caused enormous structural damage; Mula in 1999 damaged hundreds of homes. Earthquake is also a Consorcio risk, under exactly the same two conditions — valid policy, correct sums insured.
  • The regla proporcional matters twice over: because both of the above are settled on the sums declared in your policy, an underinsured Murcian home is underinsured for the two events most likely to destroy it. We calculate the correct rebuild value at quotation, free of charge.
  • Second homes on the Costa Cálida: a large share of the region's expat-owned property around the Mar Menor and Mazarrón stands empty outside the season. Standard policies expect occupation every 30–60 days; declared holiday home terms are the correct structure.
  • The huerta: smallholdings, orchards, packing sheds and machinery around the city need agricultural cover rather than a domestic policy stretched to fit.
  • Health network: the region's principal public hospital is the Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca at El Palmar, with the Hospital General Universitario Reina Sofía and Morales Meseguer also serving the city, alongside a solid private network. A Generali cuadro médico plan works well here.

On the coast we already cover Los Alcázares and Mazarrón, and just over the provincial border Pilar de la Horadada and Torrevieja.

Frequently Asked Questions — Insurance in Murcia

Yes — by the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros, Spain's state extraordinary-risks fund, financed by a small surcharge collected on your ordinary home policy. It matters more here than almost anywhere else in Spain: the Region of Murcia sits on the Eurasian–African plate contact and is the country's most seismically active area, and the Lorca earthquake of 11 May 2011 killed nine people and caused severe structural damage. The two conditions are always the same — a valid policy in force, and sums insured set at true rebuild value.
Flood is a Consorcio risk, paid on the same terms as earthquake: a valid ordinary policy must be in force, and the settlement is based on the sums insured declared in it. More than half a million people in Murcia and Alicante live in flood-prone parts of the Segura basin, and the river's record — 1946, 1948, 1973, 1978, 1989 and the September 2019 DANA — makes this a live question rather than a formality. We check both the cover and the figures at quotation.
It is the underinsurance rule in Spanish insurance law: if the sum insured is below true rebuild value, every claim is reduced in the same proportion. It matters doubly in Murcia because it applies to Consorcio settlements too — so a home insured below rebuild cost is underinsured for precisely the flood and earthquake events the region is most exposed to. Insure a house for €150,000 that costs €300,000 to rebuild and a €60,000 earthquake claim pays €30,000. We calculate the correct figure free.
The region's principal public hospital is the Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca at El Palmar, with the Hospital General Universitario Reina Sofía and Morales Meseguer also serving the city. There is a solid private network alongside them, so a Generali cuadro médico (closed-network) plan usually gives better value here than a reembolso plan. We confirm the current network for your postcode before you commit — see our health insurance page.
Yes — and we already have dedicated town pages for Los Alcázares on the Mar Menor and Mazarrón on the southern coast, plus Pilar de la Horadada and Torrevieja just across the provincial border. The Costa Cálida's second-home pattern makes declared unoccupancy terms the single most important thing to get right on a home policy there.
Yes. Orchards, smallholdings, packing sheds, machinery and the liability that goes with them belong on agricultural insurance, not on a domestic seguro de hogar stretched to cover them — a stretched domestic policy is the kind of arrangement that looks fine until a claim, and then does not. Tell us what the land is used for and what is stored on it, and we will structure it properly.
For a non-lucrative visa, a digital nomad visa and most student visas, yes, and the policy must have no copayments and no waiting periods or the consulate will reject it. Generali's visa-compliant plans meet that specification and we issue the certificate in the expected format, usually within 24 to 48 hours. UK state pensioners with a Form S1 are in a different position and often need no private policy, though many take one for speed and English-language consultations.
Yes. Every quote, policy document and claim is handled in plain English, and we deal with the Spanish paperwork and with Generali on your behalf.
