Insurance for Expats in Orihuela — Generali, in English

Orihuela is one of the most historically significant cities in the Valencian Community — a Baroque inland city on the banks of the Río Segura that has been a diocesan seat since the 16th century. Its casco histórico holds a wealth of Baroque architecture: the Cathedral of El Salvador, the Dominican convent (now a school), the Archbishop's Palace, and the birthplace of poet Miguel Hernández. The city of around 80,000 people sits inland from the Costa Blanca in the Vega Baja del Segura, surrounded by citrus and palm groves.

It is important to note that Orihuela (the city) is entirely distinct from Orihuela Costa — the popular beach resort strip 25 km to the south-east. Expats living in the historic city of Orihuela face different insurance considerations to those on the coast. We have separate service pages for Orihuela Costa covering health, home and car insurance. This page covers the inland city.

The September 2019 DANA flood severely affected Orihuela's Barrio de El Molino and other low-lying quarters near the Río Segura — a significant event that brought the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros into operation for hundreds of property owners. The Vega Baja remains a flood-risk area for any properties near the river or in the historic lower city, and correct cover declarations are essential.

Turner Insurance arranges all cover for Orihuela residents by phone, email and WhatsApp. Exclusive agents since 2007, DGS registry C0467B54657010, English throughout.

About Orihuela

Orihuela is one of the great historic cities of the Valencian Community — a place with an identity entirely distinct from the coastal resorts that bear part of its name. The city was the seat of the Diocese of Orihuela-Alicante from the 16th century; its Baroque architecture rivals anything in the region, with the Cathedral of El Salvador, several grand convents and the Archbishop's Palace gathered in a compact casco histórico that climbs the hillside above the Río Segura plain.

The city is famous as the birthplace of poet Miguel Hernández (1910–1942), one of the defining voices of 20th-century Spanish literature, and his house-museum in the old town draws visitors and scholars from across Spain. The palm grove (palmeral) on the main approach road — one of Spain's most significant date-palm groves — adds to the sense of a city with genuine depth of history.

The surrounding Vega Baja del Segura is an agricultural landscape of citrus orchards, market gardens and palm plantations — fertile because it is low-lying and river-fed, and at risk precisely because of that geography. The city of around 80,000 residents has a settled international community, with British, German and Northern European residents attracted by the price of property, the climate, and access to both the coast and a genuine working Spanish city.

Local Insurance Considerations in Orihuela

Insuring property in or around Orihuela comes with specific risk factors worth understanding:

  • DANA and Río Segura flooding: the September 2019 DANA catastrophically flooded the Barrio de El Molino and other low-lying areas of Orihuela near the river. The Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros covers extraordinary natural catastrophes; your private policy covers the resulting property damage and contents losses. Any property within the river's flood plain should have this risk declared correctly at quotation.
  • Historic property rebuild costs: Baroque-era buildings, reformed cortijos and traditional stone properties in the casco histórico have considerably higher rebuild costs per m² than modern construction. Underinsuring is a common and costly mistake — the regla proporcional will reduce every claim proportionally if the insured rebuild value is too low.
  • Orihuela vs Orihuela Costa: the inland city and the coastal resort 25 km away have very different risk profiles and different service pages. If you are based at the coast rather than in the city, our existing Orihuela Costa pages cover health, home and car insurance for that area.
  • Seismic activity: the Vega Baja del Segura lies within a historically seismically active zone — the region has experienced minor to moderate earthquakes over the past century. Seismic damage to buildings is covered through the Consorcio framework, but correct rebuild values ensure full protection.
Regla proporcional — the golden rule: always insure your Orihuela property on its rebuild value, not its market or purchase price. Under the Spanish regla proporcional, a home insured below rebuild value has every claim reduced in proportion. This matters especially for historic buildings in Orihuela where rebuild costs per m² can be significantly higher than modern equivalents. We calculate the correct figure for you at quotation, at no charge.

Frequently Asked Questions — Insurance in Orihuela

Orihuela is the historic inland city on the Río Segura, roughly 25 km from the coast. Orihuela Costa is the separate beach resort strip — a coastal urbanisation with a very different risk profile. Properties in the city face flood risk from the river, higher rebuild costs for historic buildings, and different occupancy patterns to the coast. We have separate service pages for Orihuela Costa covering health, home and car insurance. This page covers the inland city of Orihuela itself.
The September 2019 DANA catastrophically flooded areas of Orihuela including the Barrio de El Molino and low-lying quarters near the Río Segura. Catastrophic flood events in Spain are covered by the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros — the state catastrophe fund funded by a levy on every home policy. The Consorcio responded to claims from that event. Your private Generali policy handles the resulting property damage and contents losses. If your property is near the river, correct flood-risk declarations and adequate contents cover are especially important.
Yes. Baroque-era buildings, reformed cortijos and traditional properties in the casco histórico of Orihuela typically have much higher rebuild costs per square metre than modern construction. We make sure your policy is built on the correct rebuild value to avoid the regla proporcional — the Spanish underinsurance penalty that reduces every claim proportionally if your property is insured below its true rebuild cost. We calculate the correct figure for you at quotation, at no charge.
Yes. We arrange all cover for Orihuela residents by phone, email and WhatsApp from our Javea office. Every policy and every document is handled in English. Andrew Turner has been an exclusive agent since 2007, DGS registry C0467B54657010. Generali is a national insurer so cover and premiums are the same regardless of where you are in Spain. Call 966 461 625 or message us on WhatsApp for a free quote.
Yes. We arrange Generali motor cover for Spanish-registered vehicles in Orihuela and across the Vega Baja, from third-party (terceros) up to fully comprehensive (todo riesgo). We can usually carry across your no-claims bonus from a UK, EU, Canadian or US insurer once you provide the proof, and every document and renewal is handled in English. See our car insurance in Orihuela page for full details, or call 966 461 625 for a free quote.
In most cases, yes. If you live in an apartment block or an urbanisation, the comunidad de propietarios will normally hold a community (comunidad) policy covering the building structure and shared areas, as required under the Ley de Propiedad Horizontal. That policy does not cover the inside of your own home — your contents, internal fittings or your personal liability. A separate home policy fills that gap, and we make sure the two dovetail with no overlap and no gap. We can review your community policy at quotation, at no charge.
Car, home and health premiums depend on your circumstances — the property, the vehicle, your age and the cover you choose — so we always give a tailored quote rather than a headline price. As a guide, annual multi-trip travel insurance starts from around €120 a year. For everything else, the quickest way to get an accurate figure is a free quote on 966 461 625, by WhatsApp on +34 670 332 146, or by email — there is no charge and no obligation.
A UK Form S1 gives UK state pensioners access to the Spanish public health system, so you are not legally required to hold private cover. Even so, many Orihuela residents take out a private Generali health policy for faster appointments, a wider choice of clinics across Alicante province and English-speaking service. If you do not qualify for an S1, you will generally need private health insurance to support your residency. Note that the post-Brexit GHIC covers emergencies only, not ongoing care.
Yes. We explain every policy, condition and claim in plain English, and we deal with the Spanish paperwork and the insurer on your behalf. Everything is arranged remotely by phone, email and WhatsApp from our Javea office, so there is no need to visit in person. With 25+ years' experience helping expats in Spain, we make sure you understand exactly what you are covered for. Call 966 461 625 or message us on WhatsApp.
