Marine Insurance in Altea — Generali Boat Cover

Any vessel above 6 m, or with an engine over 25 kW, must carry marine third-party liability insurance in Spain. Most Altea owners build on that with a full casco y maquinaria (hull and machinery) policy — theft, fire, storm, collision and grounding — and the extended liability limits their marina paperwork requires. As authorised exclusive Generali agents we arrange the lot in English, for owners across Altea and the Marina Baja, from our office up the coast in Javea.

Altea splits its fleet between two very different homes — traditional club moorings on the town front and a full-service marina round the headland — which is why no two Altea policies we write look quite alike. If you have just moved here, a UK, Dutch, Belgian or German policy will generally need replacing with a Spanish-flag (LE bandera) one; we manage the change in English, preserve your no-claims record and accept recent surveys done abroad. The wider system is explained in our boat insurance in Spain guide.

Insuring a Boat on Altea Bay — the Club, Greenwich & the Weather

Two harbours anchor the bay. The Club Náutico de Altea sits on the town front with club moorings for boats to roughly 20 m — the traditional home of Altea’s cruising yachts and day boats. Around the Mascarat headland, Marina Greenwich (Campomanes) is a different proposition: 542 moorings running from 7 m up to 40 m, a dry dock on site, and the largest berths anywhere between Dénia and Alicante. Where the boat lives shapes the policy — club-sized cruisers are standard rating, while Greenwich’s upper bands move into individually rated, agreed-value territory.

The bay itself is kind. The Morro de Toix and the Mascarat cliffs blunt the northerly Tramuntana, and the long ridge of the Sierra Helada stands between the anchorage and the south, so Altea keeps boats sailing through most of the winter. The exposure to respect is the autumn Levante: DANA-driven easterly storms are infrequent but consequential on this shore, and they produce the surge and mooring-strain claims in our Altea files. Summer risk is more mundane — a busy bay of charter boats, dinghies and day traffic, with the collision and anchor-drag incidents that follow.

Points of local detail that touch the insurance:

  • Club Náutico de Altea — evidence of liability cover is a condition of the mooring; most members carry €1–3 million limits.
  • Marina Greenwich — berths to 40 m mean genuine yacht business: agreed-value hull, crew cover and yard periods all need setting up properly.
  • The Greenwich dry dock — haul-out and winter works without leaving the marina; declare lay-up dates so the policy notes the boat is ashore.
  • L’Olla and the Sierra Helada shore — the sheltered summer anchorage inside the islet; holding is mixed sand and weed, so buoy or set carefully — anchor drag here is a familiar claim.
  • Charter activity — boats working commercially from either harbour need charter use declared; private policies exclude it.

Cruising from Altea is short-hop friendly — Calpe and the Peñón one way, Benidorm and the Sierra Helada the other — and Generali’s Mediterranean cruising cover takes all of it in without extra endorsements. If a claim does come, we run it in English end to end; see our marine insurance claim guide for how.

Typical Spanish Marine Insurance Premiums

Rating is about the boat, not the berth: hull value, length, engine power, cruising range and claims record decide the premium, whichever postcode the pontoon carries. The Altea-specific wrinkle is size — Marina Greenwich’s bigger berths take yachts that price individually rather than from any table.

Responsabilidad Civil only (liability)
from €180/yr
  • Third-party civil liability to €1 million
  • Crew & passenger personal accident
  • Legal defence
  • Compliant with Spanish maritime law

Prices are indicative starting points. Mega-yachts, charter vessels and racing risks are individually rated. For high-value vessels see our luxury yacht & superyacht insurance hub. Contact us for a free personalised quote.

Frequently Asked Questions — Marine Insurance in Altea

Cover splits into layers. The compulsory layer is third-party liability (responsabilidad civil), written up to €3 million as standard on Generali náutica policies with higher limits for the larger yachts at Marina Greenwich. On top sit hull and machinery — collision, grounding, fire, theft, storm — then crew and passenger personal accident, Mediterranean towing and salvage assistance, and declared racing risks. The policy travels throughout the EU and EEA, with Caribbean and transatlantic extensions arranged on request.
Yes, under Spanish maritime law: it applies to every recreational vessel above 6 m in length and to any vessel with an engine over 25 kW (around 34 HP), with minimum statutory cover of €120,202 for a vessel under 6 m, increasing with vessel size. Neither the Club Náutico de Altea nor Marina Greenwich will hand over a mooring without a current certificate, and for anything berthed in Greenwich’s bigger bands the sensible liability limit sits well above the legal floor — €1–3 million is the working norm.
For a boat that now lives in Altea, no — Spanish-flag matriculation (LE bandera) or permanent Spanish basing calls for a Spanish-issued policy that the harbourmaster (Capitanía Marítima) and your marina contract recognise. We do this changeover for UK, Dutch, Belgian and German owners all the time: the Generali replacement keeps your no-claims record, accepts a recent survey done abroad, and is issued with the certificate the marina office asks to see.
Yes — Greenwich’s 542 moorings run up to 40 m, the largest between Dénia and Alicante, and boats at that end of the pontoon are individually underwritten rather than priced from a standard table: agreed-value hull terms, crew cover, tender and toys, plus yard periods for the on-site dry dock. Where Generali’s capacity suits the vessel we place it directly, with quotes and policy service in English; the detail lives on our luxury yacht and superyacht pages.
