Turner Insurance Specialists were pleased to return as sponsor of the Drawn Aussie Pairs competition at the Javea Green Bowls Club on 16–17 May 2018. This was Andrew Turner's second consecutive year sponsoring the competition, continuing a relationship with the Javea green bowls community that would run for several more years.
The Competition Format
Twenty teams of two players took part in the drawn Aussie Pairs over the two-day event at the Inn on the Green, the home of Javea Bowls Club between Benitachell and Javea. The format was four groups of five teams competing in a Round Robin of 8 ends. The winners of each group then progressed to the semi-finals.
A Nail-Biting Final
The final was a nail-biter. Brenda Burgess and David Ings faced Jean Gullidge and Doug Bacon. Brenda and Dave took an early lead of 5 shots to 1. By end seven, Doug and Jean had managed to sneak ahead 6–5. By end eight, Brenda and Dave had drawn back to 6–6, forcing an extra end to decide the trophy. Brenda and Dave prevailed in the decider, winning the competition by just one shot — 7–6.
Prizes and Trophy Presentation
Andrew Turner of Turner Insurance Specialists, Javea, presented the trophy and the first prize of €75 to each of the winners. Runners-up Jean Gullidge and Doug Bacon received €50 each. The beaten semi-finalists — Dave Carvath and Jane Baron, alongside Brian Taylor and Nigel Thomas — each took home €25.
In addition to the prize money, Andrew donated a €100 fuel voucher as a free draw open to all participating players. The lucky winner was Jill Nobbs.
Organisers
The competition was organised by Mike and Mary O'Neill, whose work made the two-day event the success it was. The atmosphere across both days made it a memorable event for everyone who took part.
