Generali Multimodal Transport (Mercancías Multimodal) Insurance Conditions
Generali's international cargo policy for goods carried by combined road, sea and air, in plain English.
This is Generali's international cargo policy for goods carried by more than one mode of transport — combining road, sea and air on a single journey. It covers physical loss of or damage to the goods throughout a multimodal transit, up to the sum insured. It is the broadest of Generali's four transport insurance options.

The cover
What it is ↑ top
Generali indemnifies the patrimonial loss the insured suffers when covered goods are lost or damaged during a multimodal transit — one journey using a combination of transport modes. The risks and guarantees that apply are those set out in your Particular Conditions. If the policy is taken out by a carrier, forwarder (transitario) or other intermediary, they act as policyholder and a transfer of the insured's rights to them is void.
Transport means & conditions ↑ top
The goods may travel by any transport means, but the following are excluded unless notified in advance and accepted (with any surcharge):
- By road — non-commercial vehicles and two-wheeled vehicles.
- By air — non-commercial aircraft, and goods carried outside the aircraft hold (in the cabin or slung outside).
- By sea — vessels that are not steel-built, are over 20 years old, or are not classified under the Institute Classification Clause CL354; and goods on ships not certified under the ISM Code (where it applies — RO/RO passenger ships, ships carrying more than 12 passengers, and tankers, chemical, gas, bulk and high-speed carriers over 500 GT) where the insured knew or should have known of the breach.
Territory ↑ top
The cover applies in the territory set out in your Particular Conditions — it is an international policy. Transit to or through certain territories is excluded unless expressly approved, in particular journeys to or overland through the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
Goods & cover ↑ top
The cover is for general merchandise owned by the insured, valued as set in the Particular Conditions. As with the land policy, certain categories (commercial samples, goods returned to origin, and — unless agreed — fragile goods, electronics and other sensitive merchandise) are treated specially or excluded. The risks and guarantees you actually hold (the perils covered, from accident-only up to all-risks) are those listed in your Particular Conditions; we will confirm the exact cover for your trade.
Exclusions ↑ top
The general exclusions (Article 6) apply — broadly, wilful misconduct and gross negligence, inherent vice and ordinary wear of the goods, delay, and war, strikes and similar extraordinary events except where expressly covered. The full, binding list is in the Spanish conditions.
Excess & claims ↑ top
An excess (franquicia) agreed in the Particular Conditions is deducted from each claim, and the proportional rule applies if the sum insured is below the value of the goods. There is a maximum total sum insured per journey. Notify a claim promptly, take steps to limit the loss, and provide the documentation needed to assess it.
