Premiums in the Marina Alta are generally lower than in Alicante, Valencia or Madrid: traffic density is lower, theft rates are below the big-city average and the vehicle population is heavily residential. A standard family car in Calpe with a clean record will typically attract a premium noticeably below the same driver and car in a provincial capital. The caveat is that Calpe's claims are frequent but small — car-park knocks, kerbing and windscreens — so we normally recommend at least terceros ampliado with glass cover rather than bare third party, because that is where the money actually goes.

Flood damage to vehicles in Spain is handled by the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros, the state extraordinary-risks fund, rather than directly by your insurer — but it only responds where the vehicle holds a valid Spanish motor policy, because the Consorcio surcharge is collected through that policy. If you become a Spanish resident you must exchange it for a Spanish licence within six months of establishing residency, a post-Brexit requirement.
