Car Insurance in Spain for Expats: The UK-to-Spain Guide

Moving to Spain with a car raises questions a UK policy never did — what to do with your no-claims bonus, your licence, your number plates, and which level of cover you actually need. This guide walks through it. When you're ready, see our car insurance page or get a quote.

Yes. Third-party liability cover (seguro a terceros) is the legal minimum for any vehicle registered or driven in Spain, under Spain's Road Traffic Law. Driving without it brings heavy fines and the vehicle can be immobilised. One rule that surprises new arrivals from the UK: the insurance requirement applies even while a car is parked and off the road — the only exception is a formal baja temporal (temporary de-registration) at the DGT.
Cover levels: terceros vs todo riesgo
Spanish motor cover steps up in tiers — pick the level that matches your car's value and how you use it:
- Terceros (third party) — the legal minimum: injury and damage you cause to others.
- Terceros ampliado — third party plus fire, theft and glass.
- Todo riesgo (comprehensive) — all of the above plus damage to your own car, with or without an excess (franquicia).
Compulsory third-party liability (Responsabilidad Civil Obligatoria) covers injury and damage you cause to others up to high statutory limits; Responsabilidad Civil Voluntaria can extend those limits further. Protected no-claims, a courtesy car and European breakdown assistance are available on the comprehensive tiers.
Bringing a UK car: the rule that catches everyone
This is the single most important thing to get right. You can drive a UK-plated car in Spain as a visitor, but once you become a resident you must re-register it onto Spanish plates (matriculación) — generally within 30 days of becoming resident. (There's also a separate 60-day window to claim the tax-free "transfer of residence" exemption on the import duties.) Re-registration means an ITV roadworthiness test, paying registration and road tax, a DGT appointment, and physically changing the headlights for driving on the right (plus a km/h speedometer). You cannot keep driving a foreign-plated car indefinitely.
Crucially, Spanish insurers will not issue a standard annual policy on a UK-registered car. While the import and matriculación are in progress, you use temporary import cover; once the car is on Spanish plates, you switch to a normal Spanish policy. We arrange both — see our temporary import car insurance page.
Your UK no-claims bonus transfers
You don't lose your claims history by moving. A UK no-claims bonus is generally accepted — commonly up to nine years — on production of your original UK renewal letter, and is translated into the Spanish bonus-malus system (the Spanish equivalent that rewards claim-free years with lower premiums). Bring the documentation when you set up the policy.
Your driving licence
If you become resident in Spain, you can keep using your UK licence for up to 6 months from the date you become resident — after that you must exchange it for a Spanish one. Under the UK–Spain agreement there's no theory or practical test, but you'll need a medical (psychophysical) fitness report from an authorised driver-medical centre (centro de reconocimiento de conductores) and a DVLA check code. The exchange isn't available if your UK licence was issued while you were already legally resident in Spain. Your insurer needs you to hold a valid licence, so don't let the 6 months lapse.
The V16 beacon — now the law
Since 1 January 2026, the old red warning triangle is no longer sufficient: every Spanish-registered vehicle must carry a connected V16 emergency beacon, which you deploy from inside the car and which transmits your location to the DGT. Buy only a DGT-approved model. See our blog for the full breakdown of the 2026 driving-law changes.
Driving back to the UK or around Europe
A Spanish comprehensive policy normally covers you for trips elsewhere in Europe, including back to the UK, for limited periods. Carry your insurance documents; a Green Card is rarely required within the EU now but it's worth confirming before a long trip. Tell us your travel plans and we'll check the territorial limits on your policy.
What about vans, bikes, classics and motorhomes?
Different vehicles insure differently in Spain. If you run a commercial vehicle, see van insurance; for two wheels, motorbike insurance; for a cherished older car, classic car insurance; and for touring, motorhome & camper insurance.

Frequently asked questions
Is car insurance compulsory in Spain?
Yes — third-party liability (terceros) is the legal minimum for every vehicle, and it's required even while the car is parked unless you formally de-register it (baja temporal) at the DGT.
What's the difference between terceros and todo riesgo?
Terceros is third-party only (damage you cause to others). Terceros ampliado adds fire, theft and glass. Todo riesgo is comprehensive — it also covers damage to your own car, with or without an excess.
Can I keep driving my UK-plated car in Spain?
Only as a visitor. Once you're resident you must re-register it on Spanish plates (matriculación), generally within 30 days of becoming resident — with an ITV test, taxes, a headlight change and a km/h speedometer. Spanish insurers won't write a standard annual policy on UK plates — you use temporary import cover until it's matriculated, then a normal Spanish policy.
Will my UK no-claims bonus transfer?
Yes — generally up to nine years, on production of your original UK renewal letter. It's mapped onto the Spanish bonus-malus system.
Do I need the V16 beacon?
Yes. Since 1 January 2026 a DGT-approved connected V16 beacon is mandatory and replaces the warning triangle. You deploy it from inside the vehicle.
Can I drive my Spanish-insured car back to the UK?
Usually yes, for limited periods — a comprehensive policy normally includes European cover. Carry your documents and check your policy's territorial limits before a long trip.
