Important update. Visa & Residency Certificates Due to a temporary administrative situation, Generali is currently not issuing residency / visa certificates for EXPAT Medcare policies (Standard, Prime or Top). For NLV, DNV, Student visa or residency renewal, the only Generali plan currently providing the certificate is Salud Opción Premium — the Spanish-language no-copayment plan. Private Health Insurance for Costa Blanca Expats

The Costa Blanca runs for around 200 km of Mediterranean coastline from Dénia in the north to Pilar de la Horadada in the south, encompassing the Marina Alta and Marina Baixa comarcas. It is one of the most expat-dense regions of Europe, with around 25% of coastal-town residents holding non-Spanish nationality and several towns where that figure exceeds 50% (Benitachell, Moraira, Calpe).

The region has the most developed expat health-insurance infrastructure in Spain — multiple private hospitals with English-speaking staff, a large network of bilingual GPs, and well-established residency-visa procedures at provincial offices in Alicante.

From our Javea office (Avenida del Pla 135), we cover the entire northern Costa Blanca routinely — Dénia, Moraira, Calpe, Benitachell

Population is ~1.5 million across the region, with ~25% in coastal towns of permanent residents being foreign — one of the most internationally diverse coastlines in Europe. British, German, Dutch, Belgian, Norwegian, Swedish, French and Russian communities are all well-represented, with Romanian and Moroccan communities in the inland towns.

The northern Marina Alta (Dénia, Javea, Moraira, Calpe) is more retiree-heavy and northern European; the southern Marina Baixa (Altea, Benidorm, Alfàs) is more international and tourism-driven; further south (Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa) is heavily British and Eastern European.

How We Serve Clients in Costa Blanca

We are based in Javea — the geographic centre of the northern Costa Blanca — and serve clients from Dénia in the north to Altea in the south on a regular face-to-face basis. For clients further south (Benidorm, Alicante city, Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa) we work entirely remotely through email, WhatsApp and video calls — distance is no obstacle to a well-managed policy.

All certificates and policy documents are sent in a few days from payment in your preferred language. We have served Costa Blanca expats for over a decade and have placed thousands of policies across every postcode from 03700 to 03570. Andrew Turner has 24+ years of Spanish insurance experience, holds DGS certification number C0467B54657010, and is the company's authorised exclusive Generali agent.

Frequently Asked Questions. Health Insurance on the Costa Blanca

These are the most common questions we receive.

The Costa Blanca stretches from north of Dénia to south of Torrevieja, with our service area focused on the Marina Alta and northern Marina Baixa. Here are the questions we hear from clients across the whole region.

Our primary service area is the Marina Alta and northern Marina Baixa:

  • Javea (our home base)
  • Dénia
  • Moraira
  • Benitachell
  • Calpe
  • Altea

From north to south: HCB Hospital Dénia (the regional reference centre for Marina Alta); HLA Vistahermosa Calpe (modern outpatient and day surgery). Clínica Benidorm (HCB Group flagship); HCB Albir. Hospital IMED Levante (San Juan, Alicante); HLA Vistahermosa Alicante. Quirónsalud Alicante. All are within Generali's Spanish network. Choice of hospital depends on tier (Standard sufficient for most. Prime adds elite hospitals).

Yes — the Costa Blanca is one of Spain's most expat-developed healthcare regions. English-speaking specialists are common in cardiology, orthopaedics, dermatology, gynaecology, ophthalmology, and increasingly in mental health. Larger hospital centres (HCB Dénia, Clínica Benidorm) have multilingual departments. We maintain curated English-speaker lists and can book on your behalf.

The Comunidad Valenciana SNS is generally excellent for emergency care and serious illness — staffed and equipped to a high standard. The pain points are routine specialist appointment waits (4-12 weeks for non-urgent referrals) and language barriers in some smaller centres. Many of our clients use both: SNS for emergencies and major matters. Generali for fast specialist access and English-language treatment. The combination works very well.

Not strictly — UK state pensioners can apply for Form S1, which gives free access to Spanish public healthcare equivalent to a Spanish citizen. However, many UK pensioners on the Costa Blanca keep private cover alongside S1 access for:

  • Faster specialist appointments
  • English-language consultations
  • Choice of hospital
  • Ability to skip routine waiting times. Our typical 65+ client holds Generali on top of S1/SNS

Yes. Generali plans cover all of Spain, not specific regions. Moving within the Costa Blanca (or anywhere else in Spain) doesn't require policy changes, just an address update with us. The hospital network adjusts automatically based on your new location. Many clients explore different Costa Blanca towns over years and the policy follows seamlessly.

The summer tourist influx (June-September) increases pressure on emergency departments, particularly in coastal towns. Public emergency rooms in Calpe and Benidorm can have 4-6 hour waits in peak season. Generali clients can use private A&E (HLA Vistahermosa Calpe, Clínica Benidorm) for non-life-threatening urgent care — typically much shorter waits. Our advice: have private cover at hand from June onwards.

The main Costa Blanca-specific issues: skin cancer (high sun exposure — annual dermatology check is included on most plans); heat-related illness in elderly during August; tick-borne illness in inland walking areas; jellyfish stings in summer. None require specific cover beyond standard Generali plans. We recommend annual dermatology and routine cardiology checks for clients 50+.

Yes — the Costa Blanca has many high-quality private dentists, often offering English-language service and competitive pricing versus UK private dental. Generali's basic dental cover (annual check-up, cleaning) supplemented with the optional dental add-on (€5-€15/month) gives comprehensive coverage. Major dental work in Spain is typically 30-50% cheaper than UK private equivalents.

Cancer treatment on Generali plans is delivered in network oncology centres: HCB Hospital Dénia (Marina Alta), Clínica Benidorm Oncology, Hospital IMED Levante, and Quirónsalud Alicante. For specialised cancer types, referral hospitals in Madrid (Sanitas La Moraleja, Hospital Universitario Sanitas) or Barcelona (Hospital Universitari Dexeus) are accessible on Prime and Top tiers. Treatment timelines are comparable to UK private — often faster than UK NHS.

Excellent — HCB Hospital Dénia is the regional maternity reference centre with full English-language service. Generali plans cover maternity after the standard 8-month waiting period from policy start. Pre-natal care, ultrasounds, blood tests, hospital delivery (private room available on Prime/Top), neonatal care for the newborn. Many British and Irish couples come to Spain to start a family because the maternity experience is highly regarded.

Yes — the network has expanded substantially over the last five years as Generali has invested in expat-focused infrastructure. New hospitals (HLA Vistahermosa Calpe opened 2019), expanded English-language departments, the EXPAT Medcare app, and 24/7 telemedicine in English are all relatively recent additions. The Costa Blanca is one of Generali España's strategic markets and continues to grow.
